The club was formed in 2001 by Charlie Williams and Alison Messum. The club was originally a team of Ernst & Young (Accountancy firm) ladies who invited friends along to play. The initial idea of the Club was to play football sociably and to improve fitness level.
Eventually the Club changed its name to Clippers (relating to the Greenwich boat service) as more people were joining who were not employees of Ernst & Young. The founding members of Clippers were Kirsty Carmichael, Jennifer Allen, Karry Tymienicka and Mhairi Gooch.
As the club continued to grow and evolve with new players joining we started to compete in five-a-side tournaments and eventually entered a five-a-side league where we finished 12 points clear and were unbeaten for the whole season. We went on to win another five-a-side league and decided it was time to test ourselves on the ‘big pitch’. We attracted some additional players which enabled us to enter the London 11 a-side friendly league in 2008 where we finished 2nd. We also attracted some sponsorship from ‘exclusive to’ (flight, holiday & travel specialists) which allowed us to provide the club with a new white and black kit.
The summer of 2010 was a busy one for Greenwich Clippers. After trialling out some new coaches, organising a management committee, gaining new players and most importantly hard work we entered the Greater London Women's League starting September 2010. It was a successful first season and with a new coach this coming season, we are hoping to continue improving and aim for promotion.
Most of all we want to continue to develop as a club where the emphasis is on enjoyment.
