DAZZLING DANIELS AT THE DOUBLE!
On a cold crisp sunny January afternoon, Gretton were entertaining the league leaders.
Having lost to them on the opening day of the season, but beaten them in the league cup, the home side were confident!
Gretton also had two new signings on show bolstering the defence.
The game began with Gretton on top, Rick Powell came close after on 5 minutes with a dipping shot just wide.
After 10 minutes The Kites did go a goal ahead, and what a goal it was!
Lee Greig played a short ball to Paddy Daniels in a central area; the Gretton midfielder took 3 steps and unleashed a thunderous drive which sailed into the top corner from all of 30 yards.
After this Gretton continued to dominate with Matty Graham and George Donnelly coming close.
Roade did have a couple of chances, but they mostly came from set pieces. The half time whistle blew and Gretton went into the break leading 1-0.
The second half couldn’t have started much better, Mathew Graham danced past a Roade defender and crossed for Patrick Daniels to score his second of the day with a low shot. 2-0 and the home side began to coast.
That was a bad idea as Roade went up the other end and scored on the counter attack.
This seemed to knock The Kites back into shape and they began to play some nice football again. The home side put the game out of sight with 20 minutes left when Lee Greig jinked into the box, and his cross/shot curled into the direction of Rick Powell who distracted the Roade goal keeper and the ball sailed into an open net. 3-1 Gretton.
The final 10 minutes were made up of Gretton under some pressure, but whenever they broke on the counter attack they looked dangerous. Eventually the final whistle went and Gretton secured 3 good points against the top of the league side!
MOM: A few contenders today, Jamie Gilsenan played well in the midfield. The 2 new centre backs had good debuts, but MOM goes to Paddy Daniels who scored 2 good goals and ran his chubby A*S off in the centre of midfield!
DICKSPLASH OF THE DAY: Could have been Steven McCool for his wild overhead kick attempt which nearly caused a small earthquake throughout Gretton and the surrounding areas ha! The winner was Rick Powell who had one of those days in front of goal, and slipped about on the heavy ground like Bambi on Ice!!!!
