Pre match.
Gwinear have struggled all season to get players and as a result of this have been on the end of some dreadful results. Slowly Pete and his captain Chris Perry have managed to keep and add players without getting results but re building and showing a little more potential each week.
This week saw the final pieces fall into place , Three of the title winning side returned during the week , Paul Bouffler who has finally come to terms with the devastating news that he can't play again due to a knee injury and little to no skill shown between the posts comes in as Pete's No.2 . Quickly followed by Nigel 'the hippo' Turner , who was in great form at the end of last season but due to ill health and an injury was sidelined for the start of this one. Jodi Hampton who had been enjoying his football at Trevenson up until the departure of their manager became available and Pete quickly added the goal machine to his squad.
The Game.
Pete and his no.2 Bouffler worked hard before the game to make sure Gwinear took to the park organised and ready to enjoy playing football again. After a frenetic start to this game which is to be expected in a local derby it was Gwinear that started to show signs of sparking into life. Hollow and Halliday started to get hold of the midfield and it was a from a great Halliday pass that sent Hampton scampering down the left he committed most of the defence before squaring the ball for the lively JT to slot home and send the 10 + Gwinear fans wild ! To their credit St.Ives came back strongly with Bagshaw on his return to Gwinear looking sharp up front for Town. It was Bagshaw that won his side a penalty mid way through the half . Thankfully for the home side the penalty cleared the bar , the pub and the church hall !!! The half finished with Gwinear back line looking solid and spreading confidence through the team , Hampton went close on a few occasions and Stevens hit the bar .
The second half got under way and it soon became apparent that Gwinear had the bigger desire to win the game but not before they had to suffer a real scare and but for a breath taking finger tip save from the impressive Turner in goal it would have been 1 1 and just maybe we would have seen more from Town. This however was the last real threat from them as the home defence looked unbreakable for the rest of the half . Paradise put in a performance of a player really enjoying his new role and with the impressive Stevens they looked very comfortable. Turner caught every thing in the air and Swadling and Perry were both keeping their wingers quiet . The killer second goal came when Dagger and Perry combined down the left with Perry showing all his class and experience to coolly bring the ball down and feed Hampton who doesn't miss when in front of goal. Two nearly became three when Hampton was upended in the box , up stepped Dagger but his weak penalty was saved by Towns keeper. On went Dave ' bite your legs ' Smith for Swadling at right back quickly followed by Tim Harrison for Cameron Irish who had a fantastic game on the right of midfield and both him and Sion deserved the warm reception from the home support . The 3rd came from a riffling free kick from Dagger and with Joe Farrell returning from injury it was important to get him on and give him a good 20 minutes . JT who had played his role between the midfield and lone striker Hampton to perfection then dropped back into the midfield to replace Hollow who along with Halliday had covered every blade of grass on the field , whilst finding time to get the ball down and play Town off the park . Stevens split the Town defence with a pass that would have graced any game ( that enough for you Nath ? ) and with Hampton timing his run to perfection there was only ever going to be one out come 4 0 . This quickly became 5 when Dagger with his back to the Town defence and starting in his own half rolled the ball up on to his foot flicked it up over the poor defender then continued to dribble at high speed towards the goal , with JT making an excellent run and dragging the defenders with him Dagger just coolly slotted the ball past the keeper. ( if Dagger thought his old man was impressed with this , think again all Dagger Sr had to say was I'll have him practising penalties all night ! You might want to sort his goal celebration out while your at it Steve !! )
If this reads like a novel then it is down to the teams great performance , last week at Gulval it would have been hard to write two sentences that didn't include Lazy , Lazy and f*cking Lazy ! Such was the performance any one of the outfield players and subs could have got P.O.M but Gings 1st clean sheet of the season and a performance that was the foundations of it all Nigel Turner was the deserved choice as player of the match .
None of this however would have been possible with out the dedication and hard work that Pete has put in regardless of results all season ! Well done Pete you deserve it .
