Club History

The history of Travellers Rest FC dates back to 1970 when a group of lads from the Hartlepool Mail used to have a kick about and decided to form a team. Their first ever game was a 3-1 'friendly' defeat at the hands of local rivals The Northern Echo, a result which was to set the tone for most of the years that followed. They joined the Hartlepool Sunday Football League under the name of Mail FC and remain one of the longest serving, continuous members of the League. We changed our name to Travellers Rest FC in 1991, although we had always used 'The Travs’ as our base.

Successes have been few and far between, though three cup finals have been reached with a solitary victory in the Division One Cup in 1996, having reached the final in the previous season too. We reached the last sixteen of the Durham County Sunday Cup in 1984, the season after our first appearance in a cup final. A notable achievement occurred in 1998 when we reached the semi-final of the League’s major Cup competition, the John Dowson Cup.

We gained promotion to the Premier Division in 1989 when finishing third, despite leading the division going into the last game. Our highest ever finish was the following season when we finished 6th in the Premier. Since the league was re-organised over 25 years ago, we have never played in the bottom division - more by luck than good management.

Notable players over the years have been Sky Sports' Jeff Stelling, former British Lightweight Boxing Champion George Feeney and current Premiership player Michael Brown. Notable players for their inability to play football are too numerous to mention.
