HATFIELD SPORTS FC CLUB HISTORY.

The club was founded in March 1976, and Hatfield Sports FC has now had 32 years continuous membership of the WHSFL.During our years, we have been 'round the cycle of peaks and troughs' at least three times and are currently much moving towards a fourth peak.We have had some spectacular end of season events where we have 'peaked' having toastmasters,guest speakers from the professional football world, accompanied by County FA and League Officials, with 'silver service' three course meals followed by speeches,presentation of awards and a disco through until the early hours for 160 players,families and guests. We have 'troughed'at 15 of us sitting on plastic chairs eating fish and chips out of paper.
During our evolving we have enjoyed sponsorship from various sources, but have always been prepared to look after ourselves just in case.We thank our current sponsors BUILDBASE for their curent and continued support.We have seen times with two teams and almost made the Premier Division back in season 1988/89, whilst on more than one occasion we have had to submit the dreaded letter applying for re-election having finished rock bottom.
Our worst ever defeat was in the early days of the Presidents Cup whilst playing in Division 4.We played Wrestlers from the Premier Division and got battered 16-0, but learnt a lot, gained a lot of respect from other teams because we just would not give up until the final whistle went.One of our high spots was dumping the then Chieftan out of the Presidents Cup, we were still in Division 4 they were in Division 2.
In 1986 the team went on tour and came back unbeaten in Europe,playing the likes of Valkenburg and DVO Sittard FC. The games were played on one of the best surfaces the club has ever played on and not one goal was conceded,which is amazing when the quantity of alcohol consumed is taken into account.
We have seen many managers in our 32 years.Our very first manager was George Plummer and another was Derek Prior,both of who have sadly passed away.We as a club remember them, thank them and intend to do justice to them and all other previous managers.
Enough on the past lets get up to date.We knew season 2007-2008 was going to be a special season for us right from day one back in September 2007, when the team met at Roehill for the opening game of the season to be met not by the usual caretaker but by yards of blue and white tape. Our home pitch had overnight become a crime scene! Both teams and the referee then relocated to King George V playing fields to play the game.
Our season that year went from strength to strength, despite an early exit from the Presidents Cup. We went on to reach the final 16 in the Herts Junior Cup from an initial entry of 182 teams, and also reached but lost in the semi-final of the Chairmans Cup.We also reached the final of the Division 3 League Cup, only to lose 2-1 on the day.But to cap an incredible season, we went on to lift the Division 3 League title and gain promotion.
After 32 years,Hatfield Sports FC finally have some silverware.
