Hessle for once had a full squad for the short visit down to Recca to face local rivals Inter Top House, who featured a full team of ex Rangers players with a point to prove.
The first half started off frantically and within a minute Hessle almost opened the scoring. A good diagonal ball from Dale was nodded down by Jennings on the right to Wilkin, who controlled it on his knee and hit a first time volley, some would say one that Le Tissier would have been proud of, that just sailed by the top left hand corner of the goal. The rest of the half was an even affair with the main threat from Top House being from long throw in-s and set pieces. Paul Warren had to make a good save to keep scores level. Hessle also looked dangerous with their long throws too. Half time was nil nil.
The second half was only 5/10 minutes old when Rowdy Yates making his debut on the left wing, whipped in a first time cross which was met by Jennings 12 yards out to smash it in leaving the keeper no chance. Jennings proceeded to run away shouting "Eat your Net!!!!!!!!!!"
Barker was replaced by Eloi The Spaniard who with almost his first touch in Hessle colours went on a mazy little run before a cool finish on the edge of the box to give Hessle a two goal cushion.
Holmes then nipped in before the keeper from a ball over the top and unselfishly played Yates in to bag the third with a tap in. Jennings then sealed the win with ten minutes left. An error by their keeper just inside the half left an open goal for Jennings to tap in from a decent distance.
The game ended 4 nil, although the second half scoring suggested Hessle dominated Top House did still put Hessle under some pressure. Again mostly from long throw ins and set pieces. Chances of note include a strong header from Luke Johnson, well saved by Warren. An unorthodox stretching volley from Gardiner that just dipped over the bar. Finally a goal saving header off the line under immense pressure, from Wilson which capped off an awesome display from the Hessle centre half. Despite whisperings from the opposition camp (GARDINER!!!!!!!!!!!!!) that he was a weak link, he stood tall and showed what a good defender he is. I believe he has now finally also agreed to let Johnno leave his back pocket.
A good all round team performance with special mentions to Wilson and Dale at the heart of a full defence that all played well and also Jennings with a brace and a good game in general. The game was played in a great spirit. The best of luck to Top House for the rest of the season.
