As probably the most successful 6/7 aside tournament side in the region the Spitfires took on a different challenge when entering the 11 a side Junior Champions League event in Redcar,nr Middlesbrough. Made up of sides who had finished in the top few places in their respective leagues from all over the north of England, this was a very competative tournament.
Nearly 4 hours after leaving Hessle on coach the lads got their 1st game underway against Redcar town. Although not getting into top gear the lads never looked in any danger and did enough to win the game but it ended 0-0.
After a long break the lads Spitfires returned to the field to face Bolton Woods JFC. A dominant display ended in a 3-0 win but given the chances made it should have been more.
Sacriston Community benefited from the slippery surface to score to take a share of the points as game 3 ended 1-1.
Hebburn Town Blues had impressed in their matches to date but Hessle raised their game and came back from from a goal down to win 2-1.
A win in the final game would guarantee a semi final spot and despite conceeding from a penalty when 2-0 up Sporting added a 3rd to seal the game and the points.
As runners up in group A the Spitfires would face Marton FC in the Semi's, the side that had dominated and won group B. The lads did take a few minutes to get going after another long break with no game and Marton were denied by the post early on. Hessle settled though and when Marton scored a fortunate free kick over stand in Keeper Reggie's head it came against the run of play. The Spitfires enjoyed the majority of the remainder of the game and made enough chances to see off the opposition, playing some great football on the way. Sadly though at the final whistle to scoreline read 1-0 and the boys were out of the competition.
Saturday showed that the Spitfires should fear no-one. Many of the other sides involved included academy players from pro clubs and the lads should be very pleased with their performance. Despite their semi final exit, I for one didn't see a better side playing in either group on the day.
Well done boys!!!
