For the last game of the season and Andy SIMMONS last game in charge, the 1st team visited Northants Police Headquarter, the home of Whitefield Norpol.
On a firming pitch with a cross wind, control was always going to be a little tricky for both teams but it was Heyford with the early threat.Matt GERNON progressed down the Whitefield right before releasing a fine ball into Matt HOGG who drove just wide.
The game then developed into an even contest with an enthusiasm from both these mid table teams in spite of the little at stake, apart from the competitor spirit. The main threat from Whitefield, low through balls into the Heyford penalty area where their very nippy forwards were a frequent threat.Heyford, whilst lacking some control in the opponents half, showed some fine close layoff passing involving all the front line players.Chances fell to both sides before the end of the first half with possibly the best of which falling to Whitefield who saw two powerful headers go wide immediately before the break.
The second half of this match continued in much the same vein. The Whitefield goalkeeper, looking increasingly vulnerable with poor handling, needed testing, but in spite of the best efforts from the Heyford front line,he was not and the match began to look like a stalemate.
The surprise winning goal came for Whitefield on 59 minutes and was sloppy. The ball bobbling about in the Heyford penalty area, needing a decisive boot to clear, did not get one.The ball fell instead to a Whitefield boot and was poked into the far corner of the net.
A near equaliser came on 65 minutes.Good interplay between Alex HEATH and Gentian SHAHOLLARI forcing a defensive header which nearly entered the Whitefield net.The two corners which followed brought no success.
On 78 minutes Bradley SWEATT gave way to Andy SIMMONS.The fairy tale ending for Andy which the Heyford faithfull were willing to happen, did not.Andy had the ball in the net on 83 minutes but the referee and linesman spoiled the show, offside.
The game ended for a booking for Alex HEATH on 90 minutes. We hardly noticed, the match and season were over.
Conclusion. Not the passionate display of the previous week but the players left the field in good spirit which continued on the patio bar before the last dispersal for the the summer break.
Great thanks to Andy SIMMONS who steps into so many roles when required, every club needs one,the lucky ones get one.
