Hillingdon Borough Football Club - History

Founded in 1872 following a meeting of eight local businessmen, Yiewsley F.C. was the forerunner of the modern-day club, changing its name to Hillingdon Borough in 1964 following the formation of the London Borough Councils. The Club flourished in the sixties and seventies with its' main achievements being the FA Trophy Finalists in 1970-71 and the Southern League Runners-up to Cambridge United in 1968-69. The 1984-85 season saw a major downturn in the Club's fortunes with the sale of the Leas Stadium.  The original Southern League Club is subject of a recorded history book (1872-1985) by Leigh Edwards , David Shute and Mike Hunter

In 1985-86 a merger with Burnham F.C. was not enough to save the Club from extinction and in 1987 the name of Hillingdon was lost completely. A gap of almost four years left the Borough in the wilderness with no ground and no effective leadership or finance.  Hillingdon Borough F.C. was re-formed in 1990 when officials of the Chiltonean League side, Bromley Park Rangers, took over the Ruislip F.C. Ground at Breakspear Road and together with four of the former Hillingdon Borough directors, formed the new club - Hillingdon Borough (1990) F.C.  The four directors stayed for two seasons and it was then left to the nucleus of Bromley Park Rangers Committee Members to carry on. To help realise the potential of the club, the club purchased the 12 acre site at Middlesex Stadium with a view to developing the site, arena and training facilities

A new company, Staravis Ltd., was formed and one of the first major projects was to turn the pitch through 90 degrees to have sufficient space around the pitch and ground to meet the higher league requirements. This involved removing some 50 trees, repositioning 3 of the floodlights, re-draining and relaying the lower half of the pitch. Further work was completed with a concrete wall to surround the Ground. Progress since has been slow and sure. Unfortunately, the infamous red tape problem reared its ugly head, and progress was temporarily halted pending several open enquiries and Council approvals. Finally, the official go ahead was given and The Directors of the Club have worked tirelessly since to push this project forward and raise the necessary finances.

The first stage of re-development was completed in November 2004 when the present owner assisted the club by building and launching ‘Astro1’ a state of the art full size Astroturf pitch utilising third generation materials which make it one of the best training facilities in the area. Continued work goes on into progressing the development plans  which should include, ground improvements including a new stand and Covered standing terraces, landscaped grounds to house several mini soccer, youth and an additional senior pitch, an extended club house & functions area together with improved car parking and a tree planting scheme will be initiated. The summer of 2005 and 2006 saw work on improvements to the stadium which eventually achieved the ‘D’ grade now required by Le

On the football side, the work in the first season in 1990 was towards gaining entry into The London Spartan League which was achieved. Honours for the club were hard to come by, however a purple patch in the late 90’s saw the Club winning the Spartan League Cup in 1997 whilst being runners up in the London Senior Cup a few weeks later.  In consecutive seasons of 95/96 and 96/97 Hillingdon Borough was runner up in The Spartan League just missing out on the Championship by the smallest of margins.

At present, ‘The Boro’ has in place 3 senior men’s teams and one Ladies team. The Ladies team are playing in The Greater London Women’ League. The men’s first team play in The British Gas Business Southern Football League, the reserves play in the prestigious Suburban Football League and our u18`s youth team are members of the excellent Allied Counties Football League. The Youth Section of the Club was formed in 1990, when four teams broke away from Alpine F.C. and in later years were joined by teams from Hillingdon Eagles. With the introduction of our Saturday morning Coaching School, the Youth Section has gone from strength to strength with many players progressing through our successful Under 18 set-up to play for the Reserves and/or the First Team. The Ladies Team was formed in 1999 and is now growing in strength.

The amalgamation of The Spartan & South Midland Football League in the late 90’s produced a stronger football League & our first major success was achieved at the end of the 2004/2005 season when the Club defeated London Colney in the Final of the Spartan South Midlands League Challenge Trophy by 4-1 on an excellent night for the club at Hanwell Town FC. This was co-incidentally achieved exactly eight years to the day of their last cup success.

Season 2005/06 saw the club go from strength to strength and both teams, the one on the field and the one off the field, ensured a return back up the pyramid to the newly formed Southern League Division One South & West following the successful ground grading, PLUS an unprecedented appearance in the FA Vase Final at St Andrews, Birmingham City FC against Cheshire side Nantwich Town. Although suffering a 3 – 1 defeat, the season will be long remembered for our great cup runs and league campaign, finishing runners up to Oxford City in the League on goal difference and also runners up in the Challenge Trophy and Floodlit Cup.

Two years followed in the Southern League South  and West division, culminating in winning the Southern League Cup against Cleveden, having already beaten three other Premier Division sides on the way to the final. At the beginning of this season we played Enfield in the Final of the Middlesex Charity Cup. Left over from last year.  With a completely new team we put up a good show before losing in extra time. Now starts a new era for the club with a new manager in Rob Burton an a new challenge in the Ryman League.
