Mawddach Barritt Cup Final
Holyhead Hotspur 2-1 Holywell Town
Played in glorious sunny weather, Town looked to get one back on Holyhead Hotspur as they just pipped us to the title, and what better way than to beat them in the Barritt Cup final.
Town had a nightmare start, as Holyhead took the lead after just 3 minutes when Kenleigh Owen shot past Richard Dolphin to give The Harbourmen the lead. Town looked to get back into it straight away and Sam Jones had a free kick cleared away by the Holyhead defence and it fell to Wayne Edwards but he was brought down but the referee waved play on. A few minutes later, Jones again had a shot which went just wide. Jones again had a shot midway through the first half which was brought down by the Holyhead defender who handled it in the process, but the free kick wasn’t given.
Holyhead’s Kenleigh Owen had a shot well saved by Dolphin before Holyhead doubled their lead. A stray ball across the back four was picked up by Holyhead’s Mike Edwards, and he ran on a short distance before hitting the ball past Dolphin.
After the break, Town had a mountain to climb and came out looking for an early second half goal. Paul Williams, who was having a good game in the centre of the park picked the ball up and ran on towards the Holyhead area and was brought down from behind. The free kick came to nothing and a few minutes later, Steve Thomas had a shot which went wide. Wayne Edwards then saw himself put through and the oncoming Holyhead keeper Ben Heald just got to the ball before Wayne could dink it over him.
Town were having their fair share of chances now and Steve Thomas, who got more into the game as he second half went on took a free kick which fell to Williams, but his shot was deflected back and the defence cleared the danger. Williams was then pushed off the ball by Owen, and Holyhead’s goalscorer had a shot which went over.
Sam then had a cross which was headed out for a corner and Steve Thomas had a shot which went inches over. Williams again had a shot went wide before Sam Jones gave Town a glimmer of hope on 88 minutes when he poked the ball home to make it an exciting finish to the game. Unfortunately, Town were unable to make it a great comeback and Holyhead were crowned Barritt Cup Champions.
