From Corinthian's to Ifield Youth FC, how did it start?
Back in 1981 a group of parents and friends got together and formed the basis of a small Football Club for their children to play in the local League. Un-like today it was a couple of age Groups only and within one Season became U12 League Runners Up. Over the next few Seasons saw more honours, however, as the Club got older those who started it all moved on, their children grown up and the Club regressed, with a few lean years from 1990 to 1993.
By early 1994 there were only a couple of Teams left, so again the Managers, coaches and Parents got together and decided that something had to be done. First off a change of name Ifield Cobras FC, a players suggestion, and a change of fortune. Bringing it all together was our now President -Mark Battie and Managers Gary Hand, Gary Slight and JimmyAhearne. With an Executive Management set-up, and some enthusiastic Secreatries and Treasurers the Club grew virtually overnight from two Teams to covering nearly all the age Groups.
And so came success Under11 Runners Up in 1996, Under 12 League Champions 97, Millenium Invitation Winners Under 14's Cup Winners (held at theBroadfield Stadium) and so it continued. With the right structure came the Chartered Standard Award, the first for any Club in Crawley.
With the Club doing so well at all age groups, presentation day became a major calendar event. All players recieving a memento for playing for the Club as well as the individual awards, Players Player, Supporters Player, Mangers Player to name but afew.
The Club was always looking ahead, where were the boys and by now girls going to go to when they reached the age where they could play senior football, step in Ifield Edwards FC and a change of name an affiliation was born and over the last few years has seen players step up through the Seniors 4th Team to the County side. Hopefully this will be ongoing, even though Edwards is to close next March. With the closure our last change of name simply to Ifield Youth FC, which will be officially adopted come next Season.
The last 3 to 4 years has seen many Managers, players, Committee come and go, but the football is still at its best, Under 10's Winning their League in 2005-06, the following year saw the next U 10's come runners up but win the Invitation Cup, and this Seasons U10 not only came first and second in the League but were also League Cup Winners and Runners UP. Last Season also saw the Under 14's win their League in style, not a single game lost and only a few rare draws.
The Club is now entering its 27th Year and is still challenging the Three Bridges, Oakwoods, Crawley Towns teams to name but a few, to be the best in Crawley and it has been a privelege for me to serve the Club as Secretary and for the last 5 Years as Chairman. I have come to know so many Managers and Coaches over the years, their enthusiasim for the game and players from all areas of Crawley still trying to become great footballers and to be the Lampards, Rooney's, Walcott's of the future.
On a cold winters morning you will still see players and families all over the Town playing with excitement and enthusiasim, chasing that ball through the mud to blast it into the back of the net, why? because its a great game.
Its also a GREAT CLUB with a bright future
