Great Games

In this section I am going to talk about some of the great games this team has been involved in over the last five seasons:

22/9/02 Independiente FC 5-4 Spread Eagle
This was the clubs first ever league game and it turned out to be a cracker goals from Stuart Peacock, Jon Cox (2) and John Richardson (2) gave the reds a debut win in the sceptre league.

13/4/03 Independiente FC 3-1 Woodcutter Wanderers

We went into the last day of the season with nothing to play for, Woodcutters on the other hand were fighting to finish 3rd and earn promotion not only that we went into the game with only 10 men and skipper Rob Hutchings-Spiller playing with a knee injury. Despite all this goals from Richard Fowler, Dan Brown and Chris Moore along with a fantastic performance from keeper Jason Gay gave the reds a great win.

22/2/03 Independiente 8-2 Urban Kings

Urban Kings in previous season had always given us tough games despite there league position and after a 1-0 defeat to us earlier in the season were looking for revenge how further from the truth this turned out to be a fantastic performance from the reds as we destroyed Urban Kings. A Hat trick from Dan Brown, one from Chris Moore and I record breaking four goals for John Richardson gave us one of the biggest wins in our history.

10/10/04 Independiente 5-0 Callback FC

A strange game this one for 60 minutes nothing happened and the score was at 0-0 then a kick to the head to keeper James Meecham caused him to be taken to hospital with a nasty wound so right winger John Richardson had to go in goal and how this game came to life. After the problem of having an outfield player in goal you would of thought we would struggle but quite the opposite a stunning last 30 minutes from Independiente resulted in a hat trick for Dan Brown, a first goal for the club for his younger brother Ross Brown and an own goal resulted in a 5-0 win. A great gesture from the team and a sign of our great team spirit that season we all went down to Southend Hospital after the game to see our injured keeper.

12/12/04 Independiente 4-0 Troop Hall

This will always be remembered as the game of the perfect Hat trick. A little background first about this game Troop Hall are our traditional rivals and only a week before we had lost 5-2 to them so we were out for revenge and flew quickly out the blocks in this fixture as Chris Moore scored from 25 yards smashing the ball into the top left hand corner with his left foot, the game continued with tackles flying in as you would expect in a local derby and then Chris Moore made it 2-0 controlling the ball with his chest and putting it past the goalkeeper with his right foot from 12 yards, just before half time Chris Moore made it 3-0 and completed his hat-trick with a perfectly placed header to make the half time score 3-0. The second half continued in the same way with us dominating and a late Dan Brown Penalty completed a 4-0 win for the reds with Chris Moore scoring the perfect hat-trick left foot, right foot and with his head.

19/12/04 Independiente 8-2 Caufield Sports

This game was played in freezing conditions over in Canewdon in a pitch by the River Crouch and we started the game like we did not want to be there as we went 2-0 down to Caufield who were lying second bottom of the league and a goal before half time from Chris Moore put us back within touching distance of our hosts. After the Hairdryer treatment at halftime from the Hutch the team responded the only way they knew how that season with goals and entertainment as the reds destroyed Caufield in the second half with 7 goals giving a final score of 8-2 to Independiente with the goals coming from Dan Brown 3, Chris Moore 2, Ross Brown, Luke Howard and Dan Stacey and if truth be told we could of scored a lot more with a fantastic second half performance.

06/02/05 Independiente 2-1 Troop Hall

This is always a fiery encounter when these two rivals meet but this game had extra significant as it was the semi final of the Andy Ward cup so a place in the final was on offer. This was a tense affair and both teams may have ended the match with 10 men as a lot of strong tackles were flying in but goals from Matt Stacey and Dan Brown put Independiente into there first ever cup final and what made it sweeter was that we got there by beating our old rivals Troop Hall.

15/05/05 Independiente 6-4 FC Barge

The blues came into this game knowing that a win would clinch promotion to division three and this game happened only a week after FC Barge destroyed the blues 6-2 in the Andy Ward cup final and also stormed away with the division four title. The game started as the blues had expected with FC Barge throwing everything at Independiente and taking a 1-0 lead, shortly after Dan Brown scored to level the scores at 1-1 the game continued to go from end to end and it was FC Barge that scored again making it 2-1 and making it look like it was not going to be Independiente’s day. The blues won a free kick around 25 yards from goal just to the right of centre of the goal and after some deliberation about who was going to take it player/manager Robert Hutchings-Spiller beautifully curled the ball into the top left hand corner of the goal to make the score 2-2, we then won a corner which Chris Moore curled straight into the path of Dave Hooker who smashed the ball in from 6 yards to score his first goal of the season and make the score 3-2 Independiente. The game continued to be tight and then Independiente won another free kick around 25 yards out to the left of centre of the goal and this time Dan Brown wonderfully cured the ball over the wall and into the top left hand corner to make it 4-2, after this Dan Brown completely put the result beyond doubt with two more fantastic goals to take his tally to 4 goals in this match and to make the score 6-2, the game was over and not even a couple of consolation goals at the end could stop Independiente from clinching promotion and 2nd place in the Sceptre League Division four.

11/12/05 Independiente 4-1 First Manor (AET)

The blues faced premiership opposition in the Colin Tyler cup, going into the game Independiente have never beaten a higher division team in the cup. It was a tense first half with both sides going close to opening the scoring but the half ended goalless, not long into the second half Independiente took the lead with a great finish from John Hegarty and continued to control the game until a mix up gave First Manor a last minute equaliser and took the game into extra time. The blues were in no mood to dwell on how close there had been to beating a premier league side and destroyed First Manor in extra time with goals from Dave Stanley, Chris Moore and another from John Hegarty to make the final score 4-1 to Independiente and put them through to the quarter finals.

05/03/06 Independiente 2-2 Cockney Locomotive (AET Independiente won 4-3 on Penalties)

Another cup semi final and this time we were facing old foes Cockney Locomotive for a chance to play Shoebury Boys in the final. The game went from end to end and the deadlock was broken after half an hour when Chris Moore hit an absolute thunderbolt straight into the top right hand corner from all of 30 yards and the blues were 1-0 at half time, the blues had the best of the second half but after some suspect refereeing Cockney got an equaliser and took the game into extra time. Determined to make it to the final the blues poured forward and got there reward with John Hegarty scoring to put us within touching distance of the final, a blatant four on striker Dave Stanley went unpunished and Cockney went and scored with a few min remaining to take the match to the lottery of penalties and it went as follows:

Cockney Loco: Scored (0-1)
John Hegarty: Missed (0-1)
Cockney Loco: Missed (0-1)
John Richardson: Scored (1-1)
Cockney Loco: Scored (1-2)
Richard Fowler: Missed (1-2)
Cockney Loco: Missed (1-2)
Matt Stacey: Scored (2-2)
Cockney Loco: Scored (3-2)
Dave Stanley: Scored (3-3)

Sudden death
Cockney Loco: Missed (3-3)
Dave Hooker: Scores (4-3)

And Dave’s penalty puts Independiente into another Andy Ward cup final.

More will follow
