In January 2004 a meeting was held in The Lighthouse Tavern, Inver to discuss the possibility of entering a team in The Mayo Association Soccer League. Following that night a letter was drafted and sent to The Mayo League putting forward the reasons for the clubs entry to the League.
Following a meeting with the League the club was accepted into the League and in March 2004 we played our first match against Ballheane B in Pat Quigley Park in Ballyheane.
THERE are now 34 registered clubs in the Mayo League, with 45 teams taking part in the various divisions. The two newest clubs are Inver United and Partry Athletic.
The establishment of Inver as a new club brings to four the number of clubs in the Erris region now playing in the Mayo league. The new club joins Erris United, Bangor Hibs. and Kimore.
Margaret Connell is the Inver secretary and she explained yesterday the reasoning behind the formation of the new club. “We have about thirty young fellows between the ages of seventeen and twenty who just want to play soccer.
Christy Doocey will be in charge of the team and their first game is on Sunday next away to Ballyheane ‘B’. The day the entire club is looking forward to though is Sunday, March 28th. when they play their first home game at Michael John Padden Park in Shanaghy.
“We’re hoping for a big crowd to turn out for our home game,” said Margaret who also paid tribute to the Lighthouse Tavern for sponsoring two new sets of gear.
In September 2004 the club won its first trophy when it claimed the Division 2A title in its debut year. The cup was won on the last day of the season when we defeated our title rivals Castlebar Celtic C on a scoreline of two goals to one. The goals on that day were scored by Pat McAndrew and David Gallagher who also scored the clubs first ever goal.
That season of the 21 League games we played we won 15, drew 4 and lost only 2 games scoring 73 goals and conceding only 25 in the process.
