Alveston 6 Kenilworth Wardens Colts 1
The Colts lined up as follows:
Sam Morris Goalkeeper
Harry Keen Centre Half
Jacob Fowle Sweeper
James Clay Centre Midfield
Jordan Fox Left midfield
Lewis Deary Right midfield
Archie Murdoch Centre forward
Spencer Tebbutt and Clark Ballard were susbsitutes.
It was a beautiful spring morning with no sign of any ash cloud as the Wardens took to the firm pitch for the last game of the season.
Going into the match the Colts had been in fine form and just one point from this match would have secured third place outright. Alas, as the bard who lived just down the road would have said, to win or not to win, that is the question…
The final score-line flattered Alveston somewhat. It was halfway through the fist half before they had a sniff of goal, and again Wardens undoing (as it has been all season) was their defending of corners.
If you look back and tally the number of goals conceded from set pieces I bet it would show a disproportionate number from corners.
Alveston went into the break with a two goal advantage with a lucky goal after Sams attempted clearance rebounded off their player, who didn’t know much about it.
HALF TIME: ALVESTON 2 WARDENS 0
Alveston seemed to grow in confidence after they scored their third goal, and they added a further 3 without reply from a well headed goal following a cross from the right, another uncleared corner and a well taken shot following some good passing.
The Wardens continued to try and get one back and there was an almighty goal mouth scramble when the Colts had 4 or 5 shots blocked and it was beginning to look like they would never get the consolation goal they deserved. However following a well crafted move down the right, Archie fired into the net following a good pass.
So, a disappointing end to the season, but the whole squad should be very proud of themselves when they look back at what they have achieved in their first competitive season.
Looking at the table, the Colts have finished equal with Henley Forest on 39 points in third place. The Wardens have won one more game than Henley, so
I reckon that gives the Colts the edge in my book!
The only teams to have done the double over them are the two teams that finished above them.
The players are developing well and there are indications that the team will enjoy success in the future and I am sure everyone is already looking forward to next season after a well earned summer break.
FINAL SCORE: ALVESTON 6 WARDENS 1
