Origins of a Football Club |
Kings FC was started in 1955 when David Open and Peter Whitmore; who were two ex pupils of the Kings School; returned from their period of national service, but found they did not have a football team.
They then formed Kings School Old Boys and recruited other ex pupils to play for them. At that stage the School had not switched to Rugby.
Joining the North Gloucester league, they had no home ground so played all their fictures away, until they found a pitch. They have used various grounds since that time but predominatly it has been Plock Court.
In its early days, the team major success was for sportsmanship, as they kept going despite not winning many matches.
In the late 60's & 70's Ben Hill and David Williams took up the mantle and eventually had sufficient players to start up a second team.
By this time they had moved to the Cheltenham League and did enjoy some limited succss with cup competitions and promotion.
The 80's saw the start of the third team which started in the Stroud & District League but eventually switch to the Cheltenham League.
By the late 90's the first team had become well established in Division 1 and remain their still. The second team experienced some difficulties and were relegated to division 4 at the end of the 1999/2000 season, but since that time have slowly rebuild a team that has made some progress.
As the club was not attracting ex pupils from the Kings School,we were required to change the name to Kings FC.
Unfortunately the club could not maintain the third team and it was withdrawn, however many of the third team reformed under the name of Elmbridge Old Boys, and they now play in division 4, with Marc Fowler at the helm.
Tom Jump is the clubs president, and he has been associated with the club for over 30 years.
The club remains in contact with many ex players and last year held its 50th Anniversary, with one of the highlights being a veterans match against a vets team from South Brent, Devon.
If anyone reading this has any additional information about the clubs history that they feel should be included, or ex players that we are trying to trace, (details can be found on Veterans site notice board, then please click on the "Contact Us", your contribution and help will be welcome.
