That’s two seasons in a row now we’ve finished with a strong battling performance, took home the 3 points, and by doing so have improved our position in the league. As the gaffer put it after the game it was certainly a game of 2 halves, as the wind was blowing a gale straight down the pitch, and we played against said wind and into the setting sun for the first 45 minutes. It wasn’t an easy game to get the ball down and play because the conditions weren’t great and our young hosts were quick shutting us down but our back 4 and young Robbie were doing a great job keeping them at bay. St Joes did take a 1-0 lead into half time when their forward scored a cracking free kick on the half hour mark but saves from Robbie and a last ditch header at the back post from Potts kept the score down.
We were confident that we would come into the game more with the wind behind us and although some of our final balls were running away with the breeze we were looking dangerous at set pieces. Sean and Kev had free kicks narrowly miss the target but on the hour mark we drew level when Smithy scored directly from a corner and it was from another Smithy corner that Potts nearly added to his goal tally. With 15 minutes to go Kev capped a great performance by robbing their winger, nutmegging another, and firing the winner into the top corner from 35 yards! St Joes kept coming at us but the rocks that are Sean and Gero were keeping them at arm’s length and the odd occasion they got around them young Robbie was on hand to either make a save or to clear up any back passes. Clarky almost made in 3-1 with virtually the last kick of the game after great approach play by Kev and Robbie Prowse but somehow their keeper managed to tip his effort up and over the bar.
Everyone dug in and fought for each other and it was about time we got the rub of the green, as too many games this season have ended with us experiencing all the bad luck. Even with cramp setting in for the last 10 minutes Kev wasn’t going to be beaten and took home the last MOTM award of the year.
