Season 2006-07 started for Loanhead with a new manager in John McEwan. John brought in a few new players and some new ideas for pre season. Some impressive friendly results had the team going into the season in an optimistic mood, and they started with a flyer. Musselburgh United were hammered 4-0 at home in the first league game, with David Scrymgeour smashing home a hat-trick, Scott Smith nabbing the other goal. 2 days later Loanhead travelled to Tranent for what is always a tricky tie. 1-0 down with 10 mins left and it didn't look good for Loanhead, until Ricky Smith clipped over a cross from the right and Scrymgeour smashed a volley first time into the top corner. Loanhead pushed on and should probably have nicked another 3 points here. However, 1 point at Tranent is never a bad result and 4 from 6 was a decent start. Liberton AVU came calling next on league business and despite a good showing Loanhead went down 3-1. A home 0-4 hammering from bogey side NCB saw Loanhead enter a tricky period. The next league match saw a trip to Mayfield Complex to face the new Newtongrange Abbey side. The young in your face team had a real go at us but we were always in control after an early opportunist strike from Scrymgeour was followed up by a brilliant long range effort from Scott McKenzie. A late Scrymgeour penalty sealed the 3-0 away win. An intimidating visit to Prestonpans followed and a disappointing 5-1 reverse having started the match brightly. Another Scrymgeour penalty was our consolation. To highlight our inconsistency we then went away to Arniston and came away with a magnificent 4-0 victory. Scott Smith with a hat-trick and Scrymgeour with the other. Next up was a local derby with Bonnyrigg at home. Kevin Graham and Scott McKenzie with our goals in a 2-2 draw. Preston Athletic visited the King George Park the week after and we were looking for some revenge after the mauling they gave us down there. It didn't look good when Preston got in front but unlikely scorer Andrew Johnson, aka Taz, got us in front with a double and David Scrymgeour increased the lead before we lost a sloppy late one. However we held on for a great win. Dalkeith were then put to the sword 2-0 at home and then we fought back magnificently to snatch a 4-4 draw away at Birkenside, having been 4-1 down. Ricky Smith with a brace and Graeme Smith with one goal, the other being an OG. A visit to our bogey team NCB was again fruitless as they overcame us 3-1 with Ricky Smith the goalscorer. A 1-1 draw with Tranent at home followed in a game we should've won. A Scott Gallagher goal had us in front but we were pegged back, then a great run by Big Graeme Smith left 3 defenders in his wake, only to get a nose bleed when he reached the 18 yard box and blaze a shot over! After the Xmas break we met the impressive Liberton AVU at Roslin. Having matched them for much of the first half we lost a sloppy goal with a slack pass back and they got their noses in front. Another lapse gave away a second and killed us off. After Liberton scored a 3rd in the second half a Scrymgeour penalty made the final score 3-1. A visit to Ironmills to face Dalkeith is always interesting and our next game was no different. 4-1 down (again) and we were up against it, however Kevin Graham's 2nd of the afternoon and 2 late Ricky Smith goals had the Loanhead touchline going mad! A magnificent 4-3 victory! A disappointing 2-1 reverse to Newtongrange Abbey again highlighted our inability to string a few wins together, Ricky Smith again on the scoresheet. Pathhead away was our next fixture. 2 up and cruising courtesy of midfield duo Andy Crawford and Alex Coutts but we took the foot off the gas and 0-2 for us turned into 4-2 for them. Ricky Smith got us back in it before he won a penalty in the dying seconds. Scrymgeour stepped up showing great nerve and snatched a point for us. Birkenside visited Loanhead the following week and were 2 up before the match turned into the Kevin Graham show. A cracking curling free kick into the top corner got us back in it, a blistering free kick from 25 yards had us level before we were awarded a penalty late on. With normal penalty taker Scrymgeour already having been replaced and with the wee man on a hat-trick Kev obviously stepped up, an expertly taken spot kick sealed 3 points and 3 goals for him! Around about this time manager John McEwan had decided to leave the club. Club Captain Colin Cordery took the reins for the rest of the season. With no chance of winning the league and no chance of relegation the last 3 encounters were pretty drab affairs. 0-0 home draw with Pathhead, and 1-1 draw with Musselburgh Utd and then a disappointing home defeat to Arniston ended our league campaign. We finished 6th in the league on 7 points with 7 wins, 6 draws and 7 defeats from our 20 games. 40 goals for, and 40 against. These figures show just how topsy turvy a season it was.
Our cup campaigns were just as poor as our league form, suffering early exits in local cups to Real Westburn, Scottish Widows and Bank of Scotland. Tranent put us out the East of Scotland and also our last local cup campaign on penalties.
