Message from the Manager
Date: 16/07/07
I find it difficult to believe after stopping refereeing I have agreed to manage a team many of whom do not speak the same language as me.As secretary of the League my wife and I have spent much time helping the club with administration etc. Ruth agreed it may be easier for all to take on the secretarial role.
We listened to how Manuel and Jorge wanted to link more with the community plus include some English players to help with communication on the pitch particularly with the opposition. I was informed that they wanted 'Mr Bob' to be their manager.I felt quite honoured and with support from my family decided to start using my coachng and man- management skills. I may fall flat on my face but at least I tried! I have gained some English players connected with my family. All are qualified F.A coaches so it gives us all the opportunity to develop our coaching skills. We have bought a Portuguese phrasebook and see the whole experience as educational in so many ways.
As a referee I experienced many problems when officiating their games- not always Lusos fault. I am determined to see the disciplinary record improve which last year was not good enough. For each game the Club will have an English captain. I hope we can display skills beneficial to the league and enjoy our games.
Luso are mainly Portuguese footballers who wish to play in the Perry Street League. Many of the players do not wish to be away from their homeland but are here to work where jobs are available. If the roles were reversed I am sure English players away from their homes for a long time would welcome a league providing Football for them While here they want to play their favourite sport. As a junior league Perry Street are unique in this. It is a huge challenge I hope we can be succesful not necessarily in winning things but in being accepted into the local community and soccer scene.
The team will this year play at Wadham school and the club has agreed to support the Leagues desire to develop Futsal for the 15 to 16 year olds. Many of the players are experts in this form of the game.It is hoped to develop Wadham as a centre for Futsal working with skills coaches from the Somerset F.A
