Malakoff Football Club were formed in 2002. The original idea evolved from a regular tuesday night five-a-side indoor kick about involving a few of the Malakoff ship repair yard employees and a few pals. Eventually there were enough people turning up on a tuesday to form an outdoor team. Lee Coutts went to the Shetland Works League AGM in 2001 to find out what would be involved in joining the Association.
When it was discovered that it was (by then) too late to join for the 2001 season, the people involved decided to put it off for another year. It was heard on the grapevine that Goudies F.C. were struggling for players and so many of the potential Boat Builders players joined Goudies for a season. Goudies struggled, but did manage three victories that year (3-2 v Spaegie, 4-2 v Banks, and 3-1 v Kinetics).
Brand new blua and red strips were purchased for the team by Malakoff & Wm Moore Ltd before the start of the 2002 season, and the team was born.
The opening match for the club on Thursday March 14th 2002 at the Brae all weather pitch was a friendly match between mostly Malakoff players, and a team made up of several friends.
The Malakoff team on that night was as follows: Keith Manson, Darren McGregor, Ryan Griffiths, Andrew Brown, Scott Wylie, James Manson, Adrian Henry, Lee Coutts, Brian Gray, and Derek Moar.
The opposition team was: Derek Duncan, Stuart Duncan, Duncan Thomson, Jimmy Cunningham, Danny Lafferty, Mark Goodhand, Angus McNeil, Stuart Paton, Colin Ewen, David Nicolson.
That match ended 7-1 for the opposition team, but it has to be noted that they had one or two quality players!
Since then the team has had its ups and downs which have included many memorable moments some of which are detailed below:
In 2002 Malakoff were losing 3-0 at half time to Hjaltland. Lee Coutts was brought on and helped turn the game, as he delivered three excellent through balls to James Manson who scored a hat trick as they battled to a 4-4 draw. (Scott Wylie got the fourth goal in the last minute).
Who could forget the 4-3 victory over Chernobyl in 2004. 3-1 down at half time, Malakoff battled back to 3-3 and in the last few minutes, won a penalty which German midfielder Ronnie Wenninger slotted home for a deserved win.
In 2006 Malakoff played Emergency Services, and were doing brilliantly to hold the Services at 0-0 (Malakoff had never beaten the Services). Manager James Manson (who wasn't playing due to injury) brought on Steven Leckie after about 60 minutes, and he immediately broke free and slotted past Billy Cromwell to make it 1-0 Malakoff. The Boat Builders hung on for the rest of the match for a tremendous result.
Another great moment came in the opening match of the 2007 season, when Malakoff faced Titans, who had wiped the floor in 2006 winning everything (and even trouncing Burra 3-0 in the County Shield). Malakoff defended brilliantly although losing one scrappy goal, and eventually won a penalty which Craig Jenkins despatched in style. A 1-1 draw with a quality side, and richly deserved as well.
Malakoffs best competetive result to date happened on wednesday 4th of July 2007 when the mighty Cosmos (who had won the Association Cup ten days earlier and applied to enter into the County Shield along with Shetlands elite clubs) fell under the Boat Builders spell. 3-1 down at half time, Malakoff came out with a superb battling attitude, and stormed back to win 4-3. A fantastic moment for the club.
Just where will the shipwrights finish in Shetlands greatest league this season
