Penzance 6’S 26/05/2007
Squad: E. Robinson, C. Jacka, K. Olds, L. Williams, A. Kearey, S. Winn, N.Trenerry, S. Berryman
Despite ranked 24 out of 24 in league positions a terrific display from Marazion on the Saturday meant that we qualified for the finals on Sunday. Draws against Milford & Witley, (South East Counties Women's League) , and Keynsham, (Premier League South) , a narrow defeat to Cardiff, (National Premier!), and a win against Old Abbotonians 1, (Gloucestershire Div 1), provided possibly the best 6 a side performance seen from a Marazion side. A Carly Jacka goal gave the vital win, but terrific defending throughout was the key. Special thanks to Nicky and Sam for boosting our numbers when we need it, whilst well done to the rest of the team. Kirsty in particular was having an amazing day especially considering the opposition. Sunday was a day too far, as enthusiasm and desire was difficult in the conditions, but honour was kept through defeats to Penzance and Bath 1 & 2. A good weekend and very happy that all players competed and gave a good account of themselves.
Well done to everyone. A mixture of good fun with a chance to play some competitive football. Goonhavern A, eventually won the tournament, in a penalty shoot-out, but honours were even in terms of performance. Lindsey Williams made her club debut as the day provided an excellent work out for the team. Carol Allen graciously volunteered for goalkeeping duties as seven games in very hot conditions did prove to be a challenge. Highlights were a couple of super goals from Jo Barker and Sarah Winn, with Cathy Campbell, Candice Britten, and Carly Jacka providing the midfield strength and guile whilst working well together as a group. One defeat, one draw and four wins and very promising pre-season display.
Marazion 7 v 2 St Ives Friendly 13/08/2006
Squad: K. Olds, S.Dickson, S.Berryman, C.Allen, L.Rice, L.Williams, C.Britten, D.Pearce, D.Thomas, C.Campbell, C.Jacka, (Capt), S.Winn, J.Barker.
Both sides gained valuable practise from this enjoyable pre season friendly, Marazion welcomed back Debbie Pearce and Sam Berryman from injury, whilst Sarah Dickson and Lindsey Williams both made excellent club debuts. The game started predictably slow, as both teams struggled to find some pattern to play and new formations took time to settle. However St Ives were already proving to be competitive and show that they also have several promising new players and should do well in their division. Marazion always held the advantage, and dispite a couple of good lobbed strikes from St Ives they were in control at half time through two goals from Jo Barker, one from Candice Britten, her first for Marazion, and an excellent strike from Sarah Winn from a corner. Marazion deservedly powered on in the second half, as Danny Thomas scored a brace and Britten slotted another after a terrific long range run from Williams, Marazion continue their pre season next week at home against neighbours Hayle.
Marazion 0 v 4 Penzance Friendly 20/08/2006
Squad: K. Olds, S.Dickson, S.Berryman, C.Allen, A. Sainsbury, L. Williams, C.Britten, D.Pearce, D.Thomas, C.Campbell, C.Jacka, (Capt), S.Winn, J.Barker.
In a friendly arranged at short notice, the two local sides produced an excellent, competitive match. Penzance controlled the game but Marazion held their own and provided good opposition to the higher league team. Highlight to the home side was new goalkeeper Kirsty Olds. In her first game in the position, against tough odds, she had a terrific game. In the first twenty minutes Penzance could have scored more than the two goals they produced, but Olds and the Marazion defence marshalled by Sam Berryman gradually began to find their confidence and shape. Between this period and the last stages of the game, when substitutions took over, the teams battled evenly. Penzance had more control of the ball however and displayed some impressive passing as most of the game took place in the Marazion half. Sarah Winn and Danny Thomas combined in Marazion’s nearest opportunity, as Thomas hit her shot pass the keeper, but it was determined that it was cleared before crossing the line. Amy Sainsbury was welcomed back, playing her first game for nearly two years as Marazion ended pleased with the performance, especially at this stage of the season.
Marazion 1 v 4 Truro DIV 1 03/09/2006
Squad: J.Wills, S.Dickson, S.Berryman, C.Allen, L.Williams, D.Pearce, D.Thomas, C.Campbell, C.Jacka, (Capt), S.Winn, J.Barker. Sub: A.Sainsbury, K.Olds
A disappointing result for Marazion, in a game that did not reflect the home sides performance. Against an ambitious and well-prepared Truro, the first half provided an excellent a display of Women’s football. The game was competitive but fair, as Truro opened the scoring, Stubbs being left unmarked in the box to slot home from close range. Marazion however remained positive, and gradually took hold of the game. The response was the best individual moment of the match, as Jo Barker created a superb goal for herself slotting home after running through the static Truro defence. Carly Jacka then deserved to take the lead, when ex-Marazion player Zoe Dyson in the Truro goal superbly saved her top corner strike. Together with home keeper Jane Wills, both players kept their sides in the game, making the scores level at half time. Marazion knew that they might begin to tire in the second half giving Truro the majority of play. However they will not be pleased with a 10 minute period that lost them the game, defensive concentration lapsed producing two poor goals, especially in context with the whole game, as Truro took a lead which they did not look like losing. A final free kick from the games dominant player, Danny Barr, gave Truro the points and a slightly flattering score line. Marazion remain positive, and now will hope to add match fitness to some of the football played, especially in the first period. Next week they will be at home again against Wendron.
Marazion 8 v 0 Wendron LCup 10/09/2006
Squad: J.Wills, S.Dickson, S.Berryman, A. Curtis, L. Williams, D.Pearce, C.Campbell, C.Jacka, (Capt), S.Winn, K. Olds, J.Barker. Subs: C.Allen, S.Freeman.
An enthusiastic Wendron side, trying to build with many new players, arrived as underdogs and gave an excellent performance. They kept the stronger Marazion team at bay until the half hour mark, when Lindsey Williams struck her first goal the club. This followed a superb move as Winn and Barker moved the ball wide to Williams who moved forward and struck the ball pass the brave Wendron keeper. This broke the stubborn Wendron defence, as Marazion went on to score three further goals before half time. Two from striker Kirsty Olds, who was having a great game, one a well taken penalty, and a solo effort from captain Carly Jacka made the result secure, Marazion camped in the Wendron half, but the away team showed great spirit and never gave their opponents an easy time. Goals came at regular intervals as Marazion concentrated on passing the ball, trying to create chances rather than rush forward in numbers. Debbie Pearce, with her first goal for nearly two years, Cath Campbell, her first of the season, and Jo Barker all added to the scoring, with Sam Berryman even having time to miss a second penalty. Near the end, debutant Sally Freeman added the finishing touch, with an excellent run and lob over the advancing keeper. A convincing win for Marazion, with a lot of credit to Wendron for their display.
Marazion 0 v 1 Bude CLCup 24/09/2006
Squad: J.Wills, S.Dickson, C.Allen, L. Williams, (WoM), D.Pearce, C.Campbell, C.Jacka, (Capt), S.Winn, D. Thomas, K. Olds, J.Barker. Subs: A. Sainsbury, S.Freeman, D. Bennett.
In a well-contested game, in which neither side were able to take opportunities to score, a draw looked the most likely result. Bude began the stronger, and pegged Marazion in their half for most of the first period. However, with Sarah Dickson, Carol Allen and the home sides best player on the day Lindsey Williams all in top defensive form, Bude were unable to score. The main talking point was when goalkeeper Jane Wills made a save but nearly fumbled the ball over the goal line, but the officials determined that it had remained in play. A similar pattern occurred in the second half and when the goal finally arrived for Bude it was direct from a corner. Marazion failed to deal with a high ball, as Allen deflected the ball into the net. This sparked the home side, and Marazion finally began to push Bude back into their own box whist managing to keep the ball in midfield. Substitutes Sally Freeman, Amy Sainsbury and Deborah Bennett were introduced which gave the side a lot more energy, as both Lindsey Williams and Sarah Winn both went close to equalising. Disappointed not to be level, Marazion were cautious not to throw too much into attack, in what was the first of a two-legged tie, and remain positive that the deficit can still be recovered.
Marazion 1 v 1 Dobwells Div 1 08/10/2006
Squad: J.Wills, S.Dickson, C.Allen, L. Williams, A. Kearey (WoM), C.Campbell, C.Jacka, (Capt), S.Winn, D. Thomas, K. Olds, J.Barker. Subs: M.Robertson
Both teams provided an entertaining game dispite the heavy rain throughout. Marazion began brightly, with their best player on the day Anika Kearey making her season debut after being out for nearly twelve months, adding some needed impetus and leadership which her teamates were able to react to .The home side made several well constructed chances, taking the lead as striker Jo Barker eventually took her chance, from a slotted Catherine Campbell pass, to hit a her shot past the Dobwells keeper. Dobwells responded, as the midfield battle between Carly Jacka for Marazion and Corinne Potts for the visitors, held the key to the game. Potts finally found room in the box and looked certain to level, but a superb tackle from Jacka saved the day, although this resulted in the Dobwells player then being substituted for an ankle injury. With the last kick of the half, Dobwells equalized, as poor concentration allowed the visitors to break away and score from close range. This was the only defensive lapse, as the Marazion defense were outstanding in the second half, with Sarah Dickson, Kirsty Olds and Carol Allen all making several excellent blocks. Sarah Winn was also having a major influence on play now, and was able to hit several long-range shots, which the Dobwells keeper did well to hold. Nearly taking the points with the deciding goal, Carly Jacka then hit the post for the home side after a superb individual run. However a draw seemed a fair result on the day, as both sides showed an excellent attitude in the conditions.
Goonhavern 2(6) v 1(5) Marazion County Cup 22/10/2006
Squad: J.Wills, S.Dickson, C.Allen(WoM), K.Olds, L.Denley, L. Williams, A.Kearey, M.Robertson, C.Jacka, (Capt), S.Winn, J.Barker. Subs: N.Trenerry, M.Mortimer.
A compelling cup tie, in which neither team deserved to lose, was finally decided with the nineteenth penalty as Goonhaven went through 6-5 after extra time. Marazion started the game brightly and took the early lead, as Jo Barker seized on to a Carly Jacka pass to score. With Lisa Denley making her debut at full back for the away side, there were few chances before the break. A familiar pattern emerged in the second half, with a youthful Goonhavern side proving dangerous with their speed and careful passing causing problems, especially via their right winger. Carol Allen, Kirsty Olds and Sarah Dickson made several important tackles for Marazion, as Goonhaven threatened to equalize towards the end of the game. The best chance came when their striker had a superb chance to shoot but only a brave challenge from Lindsey Williams prevented the goal. Marazion introduced Nicky Trenerry and Maggie Mortimer, both also for debuts, as they looked like holding on and wining the game. However excellent work and determination from Goonhavern resulted in an equalizer in the last few minutes after the home side finally found a gap in the Marazion back line. They then took the lead in extra time as their centre forward hit a tremendous shot on the run which hit the top corner of the net. But in the second period Marazion remarkably found the resolve to level the tie once again, as Jo Barker scored her second within 12 seconds of the restart. With both sides tiring, this tremendous contest could have gone either way. Goonhavern hit the post, and Carly Jacka nearly won the game with a header in the last few seconds after a superb Williams cross. Into penalties, where both goalkeepers, including Jane Wills for Marazion, were dominant. The teams swapped goals and saves, as the game was eventually won by Goonhavern. Marazion will believe that their efforts deserved more but can be consoled by their part in an amazing cup tie and the performance of the team.
Bude 2 v 2 Marazion Div 1 29/10/2006
Squad: J.Wills, S.Dickson, C.Allen, K.Olds, L.Denley, L. Williams, A.Kearey, C. Campbell, C.Jacka, (WoM), (Capt), S.Winn, J.Barker. Subs: M. Robertson, M.Mortimer.
Searching for their first league win, Marazion twice took the lead only for Bude to equalize in the last few minutes of both periods. A result that would have been impressive before the game could have been much more for the away side, but poor concentration and a terrific free kick was to deny an excellent away victory. After a competitive start, Sarah Winn struck a superb opener from outside of the box as Marazion looked dangerous with every break. Trying to hold on and under pressure, Marazion allowed Bude to brake through the centre of their defence, and Bude’s striker avoided the offside to finish well past the advancing goalkeeper, Jane Wills. The second half was a copy of the first, as once again Marazion took the advantage. The excellent Lindsey Williams was now finding some space on the right, as her run and cross from the byline found Carly Jacka on the edge of the box. Her first time shot provided the games best moment, as she made an excellent connection to volley home. Marazion could have extended their lead, both Jo Barker and Winn had further opportunities to seal the points, but a resilient Bude were determined to stay in the game. With Kirsty Olds again impressive, the Marazion back line were looking strong, but with almost the last kick of the game, Bude were awarded a free kick near the edge of the box, within the favorite range of Bude midfielder Liz Jenkins?, She followed up, to the delight of the home crowd, with an unstoppable top corner strike to level the scores. In the end disappointment for the away side, but Bude is normally a very difficult place to gain a win, and Marazion will draw confidence from a terrific overall performance.
Bude 2 (3) v 1 (1) Marazion Div 1 Cup 2nd Leg 12/11/2006
Squad: J. Wills, S. Dickson, C. Allen, K. Olds(WoM) , L. Denley, S. Berryman, L. Williams, A. Kearey, C. Jacka, , (Capt), S. Winn, J .Barker. Subs: M. Robertson, N.Trenerry.
The tie which began superbly for Marazion ended in disappointment as Bude go through to the next round. Trailing from the first leg Marazion leveled the scores almost immediately as Jo Barker raced past the static defense to score. Then playing with some confidence Marazion began to dominate the play and looked dangerous with every attack. Both Barker and Lindsey Williams went on to have further chances to score, but were to rue the inability to take advantage and have a larger lead at half time. Giving away procession from the kick off, the second half belonged to Bude. Marazion were unable to obtain any hold on the game and although still in front, were struggling to put the game safe. Finding all the loose procession in midfield Bude pushed Marazion back on to goalkeeper Jane Wills, who was superb in the away goal. However the pressure told and Bude managed to score two goals in quick succession, which finished the tie as a contest. Credit to the Marazion defense, especially Sam Berryman on her long awaited comeback, ably supported by Lisa Denley and Kirsty Olds, but a poor second half from the visitors helped Bude to control the game and seal the tie. Hopefully a strong settled squad will show in the league games to come.
Marazion 6 v 0 St Blazey Div 1 03/12/2006
Squad: J. Wills, L. Denley, N.Trenerry, C. Allen, L. Williams, A. Kearey, C. Campbell, D. Pearce, C. Jacka, (WoM), (Capt), S. Winn, J. Barker. Subs: K. Olds.
A return to form, as Marazion brushed aside the visiting St Blazey side. With the wind for the first period, Marazion camped in the opposition half but were unable to beat a stubborn defense especially with away team goalkeeper having a good afternoon. Then the scoring began as Debbie Pearce found Carly Jacka on the edge of the box from a short taken corner, who subsequently hit a superb right foot shot past the keeper. Almost immediately a handball in the box from a Sarah Winn cross resulted in the second, as a twice taken Jo Barker penalty provided an indication of what was to follow. At half time, and against the elements for the second period, Marazion may have been concerned that the lead was not enough. But they went on to produce their best football display this season. It resulted in the Jo Barker show, as she went on to produce a tally of five goals on the day, her best for some seasons. The highlight being her fourth goal, a terrific strike on the turn into the top left hand corner. Her individual effort would not have been possible without a solid defense, led by an excellent Nicky Trenerry, and an excellent midfield performance. Carly Jacka, Anika Kearey, and Lindsey Williams in particular, were all combining superbly. With passing that left the crowd applauding and entertained, despite the conditions, chances were created though the midfield at regular intervals, and it was Barker who took full advantage. Credit to St Blazey who competed throughout, especially (No 10?), but Marazion were determined to get their league season on track, and today was the time to start.
Dobwells 5 v 5 Marazion Div 1 10/12/2006
Squad: J. Wills, S. Dickson, N.Trenerry, M. Robertson, K. Olds, L. Denley, L. Williams, A. Kearey (WoM), C. Jacka, , (Capt), S. Winn, J .Barker. Subs: None
A thrilling contest in terrible conditions ended with an equalizer for Dobwells in the final minute of the game. It began with the home side dominant, as their striker missed several chances when clean through, but Marazion goalkeeper Jane Wills was able to make several superb saves and kept her side in the contest. Nicky Trenerry and Lisa Denley were also continuing to play well in the away side’s defense, ably supported by Sarah Dickson and Morag Robertson, who was playing her first full game. The scoring then began, with Jo Barker for Marazion slotting home after a clever Anika Kearey through pass. However, Dobwells responded with two goals in quick succession which could have demoralized the away side. But, showing a great team spirit Marazion replied again, just before the break, when Sarah Winn hit a lobbed shot over the keeper after a scramble in the box to equalize. The second half produced even more drama, as both teams struggled to control the ball. Marazion once again took the lead, through the in form Jo Barker, but Dobwells defiantly responded as before. Two goals in as many minutes, gave the home side the advantage, followed by a disallowed goal after the ball appeared to be out of play which could have finished the game off. But with another twist, Marazion found the resolve to come back into the game once again. Jo Barker completed a class hat trick with a well placed top corner strike, and as the game looked over Marazion scored what appeared to be a winner. Lindsey Williams, who was having a terrific game in the battle for midfield, hit a shot from distance which found the bottom corner of the net. With time running out and almost in the dark, Dobwells equalized for the final time, hitting home as the Marazion defenders were unable to clear their goalmouth. A draw being a fitting result, following the excellent attitude and performances from both teams.
Marazion 2 v 1 Mullion Div 1 17/12/2006
Squad: J. Wills, L. Denley (WoM), N.Trenerry, C. Allen, K. Olds,
L. Williams, A. Kearey, D. Pearce, C. Jacka, (Capt), S. Winn, J. Barker. Subs: D. Pearce, M.Robertson, C. Campbell.
A terrific three points for Marazion, against a Mullion side currently second in the league and in top form. It was Mullion started the game well and with a strong midfield forced the home side back into their own half for long periods. However, excellent defense work from all of the home side meant that there was no real goal threat apart from the set piece. With Lisa Denley in particular, having a great game and with centre half Carol Allen having a personal battle with Mullion striker Becky Hall, the sides seemed to be deadlocked. Then from a corner, which was to become a constant danger on the day, Hall raced in to give Mullion the lead. Marazion soon struck back, as Jo Barker ran away from the Mullion defenders to score following a Carly Jacka through ball, something that she was to repeat throughout the afternoon. Level at half time, Marazion improved in the second period as they managed to gain a lot more procession. Anika Kearey and Lindsey Williams were now combining well in midfield to give their side a lot more of the ball, and it was Barker again who struck to score the decisive goal. A lofted Kearey pass gave her the room to out pace the defense, as she hit a super low shot into the corner of the net. Mullion responded well, and once again threatened from free kicks and corners, but unlike previous games the Marazion defense, and in particular goalkeeper Jane Wills, held firm and showed that they were determined to seal the win. Important late substitutions, with Debbie Pearce and Morag Robertson showing the strength of the squad, gave Marazion the energy to hold out for their best win so far this season.
Marazion 0 v 1 Truro CWL League Cup 07/01/2007
Squad: J. Wills, L. Denley N.Trenerry, S. Dickson, K. Olds,
L. Williams, A. Kearey (WoM), D. Pearce, C. Jacka, (Capt), S. Winn, J. Barker. Subs: C. Campbell, C. Allen, S. Berryman
Marazion went out of their remaining cup competition to a last minute Truro winner, giving the favorites a narrow victory. Surrendering home advantage Truro will be delighted to go through, but were made to fight hard for the win. Despite some last minute team changes Marazion began well and midfield players Debbie Pearce and Anika Kearey were imposing themselves on the game with excellent work rate and some crunching tackles. Against an opposition full of county players they immediately set about the Truro midfield, and the result was that striker Jo Barker was released to hit the first of several good scoring chances narrowly over the bar. Truro attempted to try and break down the Marazion defense, but Nicky Trenerry and Sarah Dickson were providing superb cover, and limited them to several long shots on goal. Marazion goalkeeper Jane Wills, in dreadful conditions, was having what continued to be a superb afternoon, as she managed to hold on to everything that Truro were able to produce. The first half ended with Carly Jacka providing an excellent pass to Barker, whose solo run was then unfortunate not to provide the lead. This was to prove costly, as the conditions and determination of both teams produced a second period that resulted in stalemate. Marazion's best chances then came from free kicks, as both Carly Jacka and Lindsey Williams went close. It appeared extra time was looming, when Truro captain and driving force, Danny Barr, finally found the room that was denied her for 90 minutes. She managed to get into position near the edge of the box to hit the winner, as her shot went past the almost unbeatable Wills in the Marazion goal. With no time left, it was Truro through to the next round, but Marazion know that they gave the league leaders a real test on the day.
Marazion 4 v 1 Bude Div 1 21/01/2007
Squad: J. Wills, S. Berryman, C. Allen, K. Olds, S. Dickson, L. Williams, A. Kearey, C. Campbell C. Jacka, (Capt), S. Winn(WoM) , J. Barker. Subs: L. Denley, M.Robertson,.
A vital win and an excellent performance from an improving Marazion team. Having failed to beat their opponents in three previous attempts this season, they finally were able to produce the victory they wanted. In first half dominated by Marazion, league top scorer Jo Barker had several great chances but the score line remained goal-less. They also relied in dependable home goalkeeper Jane Wills making a superb double save, following the one Bude chance for the half. Sarah Dickson, and the whole Marazion back four were continuing some excellent form and were determined not to concede. Bude however managed to improve at the start of the second period. A Liz Jenkins trademark free kick, which hit the post, gave Bude a surprise lead as their centre forward hit home on the rebound. Bude tried to press home the advantage with Marazion somewhat dazed after having so much of the game but with Lindsey Williams and Anika Kearey terrific in midfield, Marazion staged a superb comeback. It took a piece of skill from Marazion’s player of the match Sarah Winn, to get them back in the game. She was able to display superb control and composure, to outstrip the Bude defense and pass her well placed shot into the corner of the net. With confidence restored Marazion continued to attack and now pushed forward in numbers, especially through Kirsty Olds and Carly Jacka on the left flank. Jo Barker finally found the space and goal she deserved to take the lead, as the brave Bude keeper was finding her-self under constant pressure. This was soon followed by a Carly Jacka special, as her super left foot strike from distance hit the top of the Bude goal. Barker then completed the scoring, to seal the points. The most pleasing result of the season for Marazion, who displayed excellent spirit to come back against an ever dangerous Bude side.
Goonhavern 1 v 1 Marazion Div 1 04/02/2007
Squad: J. Wills, S. Dickson, S. Berryman, C. Allen, K. Olds, C. Campbell, (WoM), L. Williams, A. Kearey, C. Jacka, (Capt), S. Winn, J .Barker. Subs: M. Robertson
The majority of the action took place in the first period, as both teams finished satisfied with the points shared. Goonhavern began brightly, as their young side attacked with speed and some good midfield interplay. However Marazion were responding well in attack, and were having the better chances to score. Jo Barker, Sarah Winn and Carly Jacka all had strikes on goal, but the Goonhavern goalkeeper was playing well and held on to every shot. On the break, Goonhavern took the lead, as another swift move resulted in the dangerous No 9 ? scoring past the advancing Jane Wills. Within 30 seconds Barker had a great chance to equalize, but her lob over the keeper went agonizingly over the bar. Then Marazion leveled importantly before half time. A good move down the left hand side saw Jacka and Barker make important runs before a Barker near post cross was met superbly by Cath Campbell, who had made a clever run across the Goonhavern defenders. A deserved equalizer, especially from Campbell who was to continue and put in a terrific performance on the day. After the break it seemed that both sides had discussed how to improve defensively and the game struggled to produce the excitement of the first half. Marazion were again to have the more clear chances, especially when Lindsey Williams went close twice. The first through a well taken free kick, followed by a well timed run through the middle which was cleverly blocked by the home defenders. Marazion were a lot more solid at the back, and now able to deal with the speed and fitness of the Goonhavern forward line. Sam Berryman, in particular, holding the defense together and continuing her comeback after some time out. In a very tight division, both side were content with a draw which helps keep their season progressing. Marazion are now unbeaten in their last seven league games, a settled squad showing consistent form as they continue to improve.
Marazion 3 v 6 Launceston Div 1 18/02/2007
Squad: J. Wills(WoM), S. Berryman, C. Allen, K. Olds, L. Denley, L. Williams, A. Kearey, C. Campbell C. Jacka, (Capt), S. Winn, J. Barker. Subs: L. Vandenberg, N.Trenerry, M.Robertson,
A disappointing result for Marazion, especially as the game was in the balance until the final half hour. The home side began brightly, as Jo Barker soon ran through the defense to hit her low strike into the corner and take the lead. Launceston now gradually began to get back into the game, but Marazion were guilty of giving away procession too often and eventually they were punished. Jill Haines, who went on to be a constant threat, equalized when she finally found space to hit a lob from the edge of the box pass advancing keeper Jane Wills. A midfield battle continued through to half time, with both sides having chances, but Launceston playing the better football. Neither side was able to control the ball, as it seemed the best way to attack was on the break and honors remained even. The second period began with a highlight for Marazion, as Linda Vandenberg made her welcome first appearance for the season. With her addition to midfield Marazion once again took the initiative, as league top scorer Jo Barker pounced to score with a well taken left foot shot. A pattern now emerged as Launceston replied almost immediately, with the ever dangerous Haines slotting home for another equalizer. In a completely open game, Marazion took the lead once again, Sarah Winn scoring well with a volley in the box from a Lindsey Williams corner. Debatably, almost immediately the vital moment of the game arrived from the resulting kick off. Marazion were unable to apply control to the game and hold the advantage, as Launceston deservedly equalized for the third time. With confidence now low, Marazion were unable to win the ball back from a hard working Launceston side and in the last half hour a dominant Launceston went on to scored three more times. They managed two goals from set-pieces, including a fine struck free kick. As home goalkeeper Jane Wills was being called on regularly and was in superb form the game was now over as a contest and Launceston sealed the points. Marazion will wish to forget the final part of the game, but showed enough good play early on to take into their next match against league leaders Truro.
Marazion 1 v 6 Truro Div 1 25/02/2007
Squad: K. Olds, S. Berryman, C. Allen, S. Dickson, L. Denley, L. Williams (WoM), A. Kearey, L. Vandenberg C. Jacka, (Capt), S. Winn, J. Barker. Subs: N.Trenerry, M.Robertson
Top of the league Truro powered to a win, however the events of the first half determined the final outcome. Facing pre match disruption, Marazion player Kirsty Old was asked to play in goal and courageously went on to have a superb game and earn respect of all those watching. Linda Vandenberg was also thrown into the action to make her first full appearance of the season, and along with the rest of the home side midfield began the game well as the game seemed to be a real contest. Truro took an early lead, as Stubbs was allowed free for the first time to take a well taken goal. Both teams were providing an entertaining game with full commitment, until late in the half when a serious ankle injury meant that Marazion striker Sarah Winn had to leave for hospital. After the disruption, two goals came in five minutes. Jo Barker equalized for Marazion, after a Carly Jacka through ball but Badham gave Truro the advantage once again at the break. In the second half, against a strong wind Marazion struggled to clear their lines and Truro dominated the game. They scored four times in quick succession a including two from Danny Barr, who in particular was starting to control procession. However with introducing Nicky Trenerry and Morag Robertson from the bench Marazion fought back. Olds in the home side goal and Lindsey Williams in midfield in particular showed great character and determination as Marazion refused to fold. They managed to compete to the final whistle against the clear leaders in the division and will only take positives from this performance.
Marazion 1 v 0 Goonhavern Div 1 11/03/2007
Squad: J. Wills, N.Trenerry , S. Berryman, C. Allen, S. Dickson,(WoM), L. Williams, A. Kearey, L. Vandenberg C. Jacka, (Capt), S. Winn, K. Olds. Subs: C. Campbell, M.Robertson
After two heavy defeats Marazion were delighted with the battling performance and three points. However, Goonhavern deserve great credit, as they competed throughout with only ten players and could have won the game. It was to take a last minute winner from striker Sarah Winn to seal the victory, delighting the home support. Making team and formation changes close to kick off, Marazion took some time to settle. The Goonhavern midfield was full of energy and consistently disrupted the Marazion passing. Eventually the combination of Carly Jacka and Anika Kearey, allowed Winn and Kirsty Olds both to have half chances, but the first half failed to provide much action for either goalkeeper as the midfield battle continued. In the second period Marazion were grateful for the excellent form of the defense. Sarah Dickson, especially, was having a major influence supported well by Nicky Trenerry and Sam Berryman. The mobility of Dickson and Trenerry, with Berryman organizing at the back, were proving to be vital. Goonhavern will wonder how they failed to score as their lively strikers created several great chances. It was Jane Wills in the home goal who kept Marazion in the game, with a stream of wonder saves and some brave keeping. This allowed Marazion to keep pushing forward, and the eventual winner was to prove tough on Goonhavern. Sarah Winn received the ball on the edge of the box and looped a shot over the unfortunate Goonhavern keeper to score, a great and much appreciated effort considering that she played the full game despite injury. With only seconds left it was to seal the win, allowing Marazion to avenge an earlier cup penalty defeat. After recent results, an excellent recovery from the home side moving themselves into a comfortable league position with games running out and keeps the season alive.
Launceston 1 v 0 Marazion Div 1 22/04/2007
Squad: J. Wills, (WoM), N. Trenerry, C. Allen, L. Williams, K. Olds, L. Vandenberg, A. Kearey, C. Jacka, (Capt), S. Winn, M. Robertson.
In their final league game, the 10 Marazion players available on the day put in a tremendous performance. In hot conditions, and against good Launceston side favorites to gain second place in the division, the draw looked possible for most of the game. Although dominant, and with Marazion purposely conceding some ground, Launceston for the first half were restricted to scrappy chances and long shots, whilst at the other end Marazion were finding it extremely difficult to create any sort of chance due to the amount of defending they had to do. Lindsey Williams, Carol Allen, and Nicky Trenerry at the back must be picked out for special praise, as all were having outstanding games. Allen, in particular was relishing her contest with Launceston top scorer Jill Haines. Behind them the consistently good Jane Wills was having yet another class goalkeeping display, proving once again to be one of the best keepers in the county. Delighted to be level at half time, Marazion inevitably were going to tire in the second half. However they continued to battle, as Linda Vandenberg, Anika Kearey, Kirsty Old and Carly Jacka fought for every tackle in midfield. Some players, Vandenberg and Olds in particular, continuing to play well even when asked to move around the field to different positions. Even strikers Sarah Winn and Morag Robertson were running themselves to a standstill, just to get a point for their team. However, ironically is was a long ball from Launceston, which Marazion initially failed to clear, which sealed the points, as numbers eventually told in the box and the Launceston winger hit a terrific shot low into the corner of the net. Possibly the only way that Jane Wills was going to concede anything, in the form she was showing. A terrific display and team spirit in defeat by Marazion, especially when the result was not crucial to their season. They now look forward to building on this campaign for next year, especially with the character in the side. This begins with the upcoming FA 5 a side at Newquay.
