McEwan broke their 3rd place run and finished 2nd in Miami! The US team plus Stu and a token appear from James won through to the final where they were narrowly beaten.
Previous News:
McEwan return from the Montreal tournament and Canadian road trip with another third place finish and lots of interesting stories!
We played some good football again, winning a couple of games and drawing (conceeding two late goals!) with the eventual winners of the tournament. Scores and match reports have been updated in the results page.
After the tournament, the boys took a road trip through Canada which included adventures in Montreal (driving around the GP track in a 7 seater Grand Dodge Caravan), guided tour of Ottawa from Lindsay (our no.1 supporter), hitting the heights of Toronto and a beer at the top of the CN tower and a blow-out weekend in New York.
Brief History:
McEwan’s footballing journey began in Gainesville, USA in 1995 when a bunch of “soccer” loving students at the University of Florida formed a team to play in the local Sunday league. Like many student teams, the McEwan players went their separate ways after leaving university and the club went into hibernation. In 1998, club founder Michel Cowdery moved to London where he worked with fellow football fan James Brown, played together for their company team, becoming good friends in the process and remaining so when Michel moved back to the States in 2000. So much so that when Michel decided to reform McEwan FC to play in a tournament in Iceland in 2006, James was very keen to be a part of it. The club was reborn with a new UK branch and, when players from both sides of the Atlantic made the trip to Iceland, a new chapter in McEwan’s history had begun. The club now get together every few months, with six of the original squad joining with seven regulars from England to take part in three or four international tournaments per year. These regulars are supported by extras from both sides of the pond, plus the odd ex-professional provided by tournament organisers – Liverpool legend Bruce Grobbelaar has played in goal for McEwan in the past! The club’s exploits have taken them to various exotic locations including Iceland (twice), London (twice), Las Vegas, Miami and, most recently, Montreal.
What 2009 8-a-side tournament should McEwan enter?
New York St. Patrick's Cup (March 14)
California Sonoma Cup (June 20)
Washington, D.C. Potomac Cup (July 11-12)
Boston Classic (July 25)
New York Summer Classic (August 1-2)
