M&T Vets vs Redbridge Old Boys 31-3-12
With only 11 fit players to choose from M&T manager Barry Wellings made the bold decision to play 3 strikers in a very attacking formation.
The decision turned out to be a good one as Mark Turnbull opened the scoring just 10 minutes in with an easy left foot shot thanks to a mistake by the Redbridge defender.
The front three started to gel with Ian Rispin playing an integral part in everything good. It wasn’t long before the pressure paid off again and Turnbull once again found himself one on one and volleyed the ball into the top corner.
A few minutes later some good passing found Turnbull in the box with his back to goal. As he laid the ball off there was a clear foul but the ref played advantage and, even though Rispin was offside when Kev Tyler passed the ball through, he gave the goal rather than pull it back for a penalty.
Redbridge then had an attack which broke down and Turnbull found himself with the ball out on the right. He ran straight at the back four who seemed to just let him through to the back post to square the ball to Tyler who blasted it home.
Half time 4-0
The second half was much like the first with M&T in possession most of the time.
However, in a rare attack the Redbridge striker while looking for his partner missed kicked the cross which went perfectly into the top corner.
This didn’t faze M&T and once more they were on the attack. Rispin and Tyler combined and then slid the ball through for Turnbull who took it round the keeper and slotted it home for his hatrick.
Then a strange incident happened when Ian Rispin crossed the ball which hit the back post and came out toTyler. Before he could shoot the ref blew his whistle and indicated that the ball had crossed the lined. Neither team could understand this decision but the phantom goal was given.
M&T continued to pile on the pressure and when Turnbull’s shot came off the keeper Nick Pragnell came running in to power home the rebound.
It wasn’t over yet though and Kev Tyler found himself in the right place to tap the ball in from a poor Redbridge clearance. Giving him the two goals his performance deserved.
Although M&T were very dominant up front it has to be said that Nick Pragnell and Darren Strange did a fantastic job in midfield and if it wasn’t for them M&T would not have been able to play with the freedom they did up front.
As always the M&T defence were superb and through good organisation and simple football the opposition really didn’t have a sniff at goal.
Final score M&T 8 Redbridge 1
