CLUB HISTORY
A brief history (19/06/07)

The club was formed in 1948 (initially as Mickleover Old Boys) and spent the first 44 years of their existence competing locally in the Derby and District Senior League.
In 1982 they, along with other members of the Club, embarked on an ambitious campagne to develop their own facilities. Dedicated Club members led a serious fund raising drive, and by 1991 had raised over £35,000. Work on the Clubhouse began early in 1992, and the facilities were formally opened later that year.
Following developmen of the facilities the ambitions of the Club increased, and an application was made to join the Central Midlands Football League. This was successful and in 1993 they drafted in an entire new management team led by Tony Shaw which resulted in both teams finishing 6th in their respective divisions, a more than reasonable start to life in the CMFL.
Season 1994/95 saw Sports gain promotion to the CMFL Supreme Division and reach the semi-final of the League Cup on the way. The following year was simply on of consolidation as Sports fought to retain their new status. Mark Kelsey took up the managerial reins, and season 96/97 saw Sports finish a creditable 6th place.
Meanwhile off the field. Sports were learning to manage the new facilities. There was some limited on going expenditure in the railing off of the pitch, laying slabs to prvide hard standing and erection of a small stand, but with the general maintenance as well, there was little money for anything else. However, to progress, the Club needed to erect floodlights. A concerted fund raising efort was made and in 1997 at a capital cost of £30,000, the ambition awas realised. The lights themselves are good as any in the league.
When we established the new facilities, we set up an active Youth policy and now with 18 teams established at Junior level from Under 8's to Under 18's. The future looks bright.
The latest development was aimed at providing dedicated facilities for our Junior football teams and with the help of a National Lottery grant, it involved taking one of the adjacent fields to turn into a junior pitch. In addition, we built new changing rooms, referees facilities, new toilets, showers etc put in mains sewerage and even managed to extend and resurface the car park.
Back on the pitch 1997/98 saw Sports gain third place finish in the CMFL Supreme Division and 12 months later crowned 1998/99 CMFL Champions. This season saw Sports first venture into the FA Vase where they embarked on an exhilarating run. After beating several teams from higher leagues, they were eliminated in the 3rd round in controversial circumstances. Winning 3-0 at eventual finalists Bedlington Terriers, and with 14 minutes remaining, the home sides floodlights failed. After an FA enquiry Sports lost the 'replay' 0-2.
Sports were assured promotion to the Northern Counties East League, and another stand went up, the hard standing was increased, and a 6ft fence was erected around the pitch.
1999/2000 saw Sports challanging hard, they had to settle for 4th place. They also reached the semi-final of the Derbyshire Senior Cup, and fell at the 3rd round of the FA Vase again.
2000/01 season saw Sports finish 3rd in the league, reach the 4th round of the FA Vase.
2001/02 season was dissapointing with 5th place in the league, and early exits from all Cup competitions. Mark Kelsey who did a fine job in his 7 years at the club, moved on ad was replaced by ex Belper Town manager Martin Rowe.
2002/03. Rowes first season in charge, his talented squad were crowned NCEL Division One Champions. They also won the Wikinson Sword Trophy, and reached the Final of the Derbyshire Senior Cup. They again reached the 3rd round of the FA Vase.
Sports were again in a position to move up the non-league pyramid to the NCEL Premier division. We had to erect a 280 seat stand first.
2004/05 saw Sports beaten in the Final of the NCEL League Cup by Hallam 0-1
2005/06 saw another appearence in the Derbyshire Senior Cup Final.
2006/07 Was a turbulant season.Rowe was sacked, and Dick Pratley took charge. Sports went on to win the NCEL League Cup on penalties, after drawing 1-1 with promoted Garforth Town.
After 4 seasons in the NCEL, Sports are now looking to push for promotion to the Unibond Leagues.
