MLFC kick off their season THIS Sunday against AFC Penrith. The ladies are playing this game at the Trimpell Sport and Social Club instead of LMC due to lack of changing facilities with the delay of the new build at the usual KO time of 2pm. MLFC encourage as many supporters as possible to get the ladies off to the start they have worked hard for!!
Visitors beat national team and Corinthians in pre-season tour
MORECOMBE FC’s women’s team paid a visit to these shores this weekend and gave the Manx a footballing lesson.
On Saturday, the Lancashire side played the Manx national team, the visitors winning the match at Glencrutchery Road 7-3.
Alannah Hall, Gillian Christian and an own goal made up the hosts’ total.
On Sunday, Morecombe continued their winning streak by defeating the current Manx champions Corinthians 4-0 at Ballafletcher.
Also on Sunday, Malew temporarily reformed and defeated a Castletown Select team 5-1 in the Sandra Raeside trophy at the Clagh Vane playing fields.
A full round-up of all the women’s football will appear in this week’s Manx Independent.
Morecambe ladies became the first women’s team from the Lancaster and Morecambe area ever to reach the first round proper of the women’s FA CUP. After good recent victories Morecambe went into the game full of hope, even though they had never beaten there opponents, Penrith. However after only five minutes play Morecambe were already facing an uphill task when there debutant keeper Catherine Clough, was cruelly dismissed after a challenge on the Penrith Striker. Morecambe quickly had to re shuffle and unfortunately Fish had to give way for the replacement keeper Nat Saunders. With Morecambe on the back foot Penrith started to exert some pressure and as the Penrith Striker went on a run through the middle she was tripped by Laura Ivisnon just outside the box. To the Morecambe players horror the referee not only gave a penalty but also sent off Ivinson. Morecambe were now rattled and under the cosh. Penrith scored the penalty and looked set to have a field day against the nine players of Morecambe. What a shock they were about to receive. Firstly Megan Doherty danced through the Penrith defence after receiving a long pass. She burst into the area and slid a low shot under the advancing keeper. Then, shortly after, Doherty again received the ball and after flicking the it over a defenders head she finished coolly with a low volley past the sprawling Penrith Keeper. With the players and fans in disbelief and half time approaching Jo Norris took a gamble and found herself in the Penrith box. Without time to think she latched onto a low cross from Callis and slid home to make it three one to Morecambe. With everyone thinking the unthinkable could really happen there was a mix up between Jenny keane and keeper Saunders and Penrith capitalised to slide the ball into an open net. Although Morecambe were winning at half time most people realised that to battle for another 45 Minutes without losing would be impossible. How wrong they were! After the break it was end to end. Doherty single handedly terrorising the opposition defence, while up the other end the defence of Roper, Mcalpine, Keane, Paling and Latterly Brown were immense. They put everything on the line in a desperate attempt to hang on. Inevitably they could not hold on forever and when Mcalpine failed to clear the ball fell loose and Penrith scored with a spectacular long range effort. At this point with the scores now level Morecambe had no option than to go for goal as with only nine players they did not want to play extra time. From the re start the ball was swept out to Callis on the right wing, she quickly beat her opposing winger and whipped over a great cross and Norris lifted a delightful lob over the advancing Penrith keeper. The place erupted and Morecambe could not believe what was happening. Somehow they now seemed to generate more energy and were not going to give up the lead again, throwing everything in the way of Penrith. With only seconds left after a battling game Penrith received a free kick on the edge of the Morecambe box. If they were to score now it would mean extra time and surely the end for Morecambe. Thankfully the free kick sailed high over the bar and the referee blew his whistle for full time. Most of the Morecambe players either sank to their knees or ran around hugging anyone they could. This was a fantastic end to a memorable match and a thoroughly deserved victory for the ladies of Morecambe.
