Mosborough Boys Football Club was founded in May 2005 by John Bingley, Carl Cousins and Sarah Moohan.
We started out with a handful of players that were unhappy with just kicking a ball about on a Saturday afternoon. They were given false hopes of joining a league, but the trainer had no intention of doing this. Every child involved, gleefully left this training behind to join our fledgling club.
We set up training for the kids at Killamarsh Sports Centre in the Mosborough area of Sheffield and we trained every Saturday from that moment on.
Within weeks we first saw our players double in numbers, then triple and almost quadrupled. Because the age of our players varied, we decided to form three teams for the 2005/06 season. The age groups we had were Under 8’s, Under 10’s and Under13’s.
The first task we had was to find a league to play in. It was too late for us to enter the Sheffield and District Sheffield Junior League, so we opted for the Millennium League. The Millennium League is a Rotherham based league and is very well organised.
Our next task was to find funding. I thought this would be the easy part (stop laughing at the back there). It was only when a generous parent stepped in to help the team out with sponsorship that things really started to happen for us.
During the setting up of this football team, we have found that to run the club properly we needed people to fill roles like the Child Protection Officer, first aiders for each team, the secretary (whose job is never finished) and of course the managers. I found this all perplexing as when I started playing football back in 1983 (yes I am that old), all you needed then was a manager and eleven players. How football has changed. So to fill these roles, we have had to rely on the support of the kids parents. Football today would not be able to run if not for these people. My hat goes off to you all.
