Samuel Girvan is the club’s number one goalkeeper and was a 2011 summer signing. Girvan had not played for about six years, where he had previously represented Cardiff University in the first team. The first team manager spotted him in the fourth team and was quickly promoted. Just three minutes into his New Cottingham unofficial debut in a pre-season match against Gretton Reserves, their Manager, Jim Wilson (also on the New Cottingham books) said “we’ll have him”. So Girvan went from having no clubs to having two clubs in the matter of days. Injury saw him substituted at half time in his second pre-season game, but was able to make his debut for Gretton Reserves just days later, where despite conceding two goals in the opening eight minutes, he went on to have a fine match and helped Gretton to a 3-2 victory. New Cottingham Manager, Neil Jarman will be hoping he can do the same for the Yellow and Greens. In terms of his playing style, Girvan is a good shot stopper and is never shy to come off his line when the ball is pimped into the box. Overall, Girvan looks like he may be the long term solution to the problem between the New Cottingham sticks, after Richard Moore and Adam Muir in the first two season.
