Originally known as Wheatons, Newtown AFC was formed in 1973 when the Club moved to The Globe Inn which is situated in the area of Newtown in Exeter, thus the name NEWTOWN FOOTBALL CLUB.
Since its formation the Club has been a member of the Devon & Exeter Football League and 5 years ago became a member of the Exeter & District Sunday League.
Phil Heaver, Vice-Chairman, and Steve Rogers, the Club's Treasurer, are the longest servicing members, followed by Paul Kennard, the Club Secretary.
Since the formation of Newtown there has been 3 Chairman: Ivor Kennard, Maurice Heaver and, at the present time, Pat McDonagh. Paul Kennard has served as Treasurer and Secretary over the past 28 years and recently received a long service award from the Devon County FA. Steve Rogers has been Treasurer for the past 15 years.
Through the years the Club has grown from 1 team to 3 on Saturdays. Success has been varied but we pride ourselves that over the past 4 years all 3 teams have been playing in the Senior divisions of the Devon & Exeter Football League. Last season the 1st Team were promoted to Premier football for the first time in our history.
When Newtown entered the Exeter & District Sunday League we fielded 1 team, 3 years later we had 2, and in 2006-07 we won the Premier and Division 2, not been done in the past 16 years. Unfortunately at the end of last season the 2nd team was withdrawn.
