History

NORBURY ATHLETIC JFC
03 Jan 2008

Norbury Athletic started in 1968 and our first game was against Tideswell Rovers and was remarkable for two hat tricks one from Tony Pye and one from Chris Hutton who was the son of Ray Hatton who was our first manager.

The Club joined it's first league in 1969 and our first team was at U12 and it finished being runners-up in the Cup. It was in this season that Paddy Campbell joined the Club and helped to lay the foundations of the current Club

In season 1970/71 this team went on to do the League and Cup double in the Hazel Grove League.

In 1972 we entered the Wilmslow and district League at U14 and U16 and the older team were also double winners in the League and cup.

1973 saw us begin to link our teams together with 3 teams in the Wilmslow League and the older lads going on to play open age football.

1974/5 saw us back in the Hazel Grove League as well as entering a young team made up of 8, 9 and 10 year olds in the South Stockport Junior Football League.

1977/78 and we 5 teams 2 in the South Stockport and 3 in the East Cheshire Junior
League with our Under 11A team winning the South Stockport League under the management of Roy Duffield who had many successful years as a team manager, Club Chairman and President. It is a matter of great sadness that Roy died suddenly in
October 2007 and will be greatly missed as he presided over and was the reason behind some of the most successful years in the Club’s history.

1980/81 saw the Club fielding 7 teams plus an open age team fees then were a £5.00 signing on fee plus 20p a week!

The 1980’s were a golden era for the Club which saw our teams winning Leagues and Cups on a regular basis whilst still maintaining the Club’s philosophy of trying to give every player a game and also saw our “5 minutes of fame” when the Club featured on the “Challenge Anneka” television programme which featured the most celebrated “bum” on television and we do not mean Richard Gregg’s!

The result of the programme is what you see today as our home ground with its changing rooms, running water, electric and the pitch.

1999/00 saw us running 5 teams and by then the subs were £75.00 per player and no 20p’s to collect on a match day.

We are fortunate that today we still have people who are dedicated to giving children a game of football and long may it continue.
