The club was formed in 2009 from a small group of friends and played its first year in the Sunday Welfare League. Being created by the fans, for the fans has meant that Northern United have a small but extremely dedicated following, with many affectionate nicknames spawning from their fans. The Golds, The Handsomes, and The Bobcats to name but a few.
The club is now in its third season in the AAFA and currently play within Division 2 North. The club's current aim is to push for promotion as well as having a successful run in the cups. The new expansive style of football combined with their ELE (Everybody Love Everybody) attitude has meant that the club and fans are now moving the right direction.
Northern United's new home ground is Inverdee Football Pitches, beside 'Goals'. Northern United won the prestigious fair play award in 2010/11.
