Alan Tittensor, who realised that there was the potential to form a leading junior football club at Norton Cricket Club, formed Norton United Football Club in 1989.
The team entered the Staffordshire Senior League. After a couple of years, during which the foundations were laid, the club started to gain success, and won the first of its trophies with a 2-1 win over Redgate Clayton in the League Cup. Further success followed and the Staffordshire Senior League and Cup double was won in 1997. The League success was emulated in 1999 along with a victory in the prestigious Staffordshire FA Senior Vase Final. The League and Cup double was repeated in 2001 and this was followed by promotion to The North West Counties Football League. 2004-5 saw a top 5 finish and 2005-6 we came 8th. In 2004-05 we added to our list of honours by winning the Staffordshire FA Senior Vase for the second time. Lee Pugh was the star of this competition, scoring in every round. We are led to believe that this is a unique achievement We have changed managers again this season and we are delighted to have David Beswick in place with his team of Dave Johnson, assistant and Steve Chadwick coach. During the last five years considerable change has taken place. The surrounds of the pitch have been upgraded considerably, floodlights have been erected and the whole playing surface has been relayed at the cost of £35,000. We now have a playing surface to be proud of. We also now have a second pitch at the far end of the ground which allows us to have most of our junior sides playing on site. In addition to this the clubhouse has been redeveloped and is a very fine building. We are indeed, very grateful to the organisations that have helped along the way. Plans are in place for a new changing room block and we are hoping to improve all the facilities further over the next twelve months.
Over the last two seasons several changes have taken place with regard to the size of the football club. We now run a second team in the Staffordshire County Senior League. In 2003, the second team were winners of The Midland League Cup, beating Hanley Town in the final by 2-0.
We have junior teams at Under 18, 17, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11 and 10’s.
In junior football, should all players be given the same amount of time on the pitch during a game, regardless of ability?
Yes, always. Getting kids involved is the most important thing.
Yes, unless it is an important game.
No. Winning is important at all ages, so the best players should play more often.
