Norwich City's eagely awaited opener in the South East Combination League finally arrived last Sunday in the form of Tottenham Hotspur Ladies. 'Spurs' are tipped to be one of several teams that fancy their selves title contenders with leads to the much coverted prize of winning promotion to the second tier of the womens game.
City were under no illusion that after having their best season to date last year that results would come easily and knew 'Spurs' would be a difficult opener.
With new signing Sophie Gillett lining up alongside another new addition Charlotte Branch through the Norwich City Girls Centre of Excellence programme the midfield was the main change to the side from the previous season. Having also lost two players to lower league opposition City also welcomed further signing Kirstie Kindred from Colchester United.
To be expected the 1st half was a scrappy afair with neither side taking any real control of the game, limited chances in front of goal were not really clean cut and neither keeper had a save to make.
City made changes at half time in midfield and this seemed to help them win the midfield battles that they had struggled with in the 1st half. As the game progressed both sides pressed forward to try and break the deadlog but with both defences holding strong the forwards were continually frustrated.
With 10 minutes remaining City had their best chance of the game, with the ball falling to Kirstie Kindred on the right, she fired what looked like the winning goal into the top right hand corner of the spurs goal, but to Citys dismay the keeper pulled off a fantastic save to keep the score all square.
With the final whistle blown it was points all round and whilst City will feel they had a chance towards the end of the game it was probably the fairest result.
Emma Fletcher Joint Manager said "It was vital for us to get something from the game today, we knew Tottenham would be a real test for us for the opening game of the season, and they proved that straight from kick off. Every game in this league is going to be tough and it was important that we started the season well. Yes a win would have been fantastic but I cant praise the performance of the girls enough in the second half, the defence were incrediable today and they ensured that Holly in goal had very little to do and thats important"
City face MK Dons next week at home 2pm at Plantation Park, with their visitors having opened their league campaign off with a win, City will need to ensure they continue their solid start.
