Notts Police Football Club has made a good start to the 2009/10 NSL Senior League campaign with 9 points from a possible 12. Having been tipped by many to be the ‘whipping boys’ it is credit to all involved in the Club that we have taken maximum points off quality sides Kimberley MW, Caribbean Cavaliers and Wollaton. Many have worked extremely hard since the close of last season to get our side to a position where we feel we can compete. As 18 clubs had varying pre-seasons I’m sure all were hopeful of gaining success for the season but obviously not all sides can finish at the top of the table. It’s a shame that success is mostly measured by league positions and that many within Amateur football are results driven. Whilst I have my own hopes and wishes for this season Notts Police FC is a club with different pressures and demands. Anyone who has had the pleasure of wearing one of our jerseys will tell you that it can be a unique experience. Like many Managers fortunate to take charge of the side I have been, over the years, frustrated by player availability due to work commitments and unsociable shifts. It’s always difficult to gain any momentum when a side has to be changed on a weekly basis and when results go against you it’s no shock that the squad shrinks. In past seasons Notts Police FC has survived with the majority of match day duties being performed by a one or at best two man bands. However, upon early evidence this season looks to be different from previous ones. The back room staff is second to none whilst the playing squad is stronger than I can remember. In years gone by we have had some real quality that may never be bettered but this year we appear to have strength of depth and competition in all departments. During our recent game against Wollaton I looked round to see the dugout full of top class players and club officials. The side performed admirably against quality opposition watched by other squad members (some injured) and lifelong supporters. It’s good to meet up with old adversaries and meet some of the new faces to the NSL. It’s important to give the men in black a special mention because without them our participation would not be possible. With so many top class ‘football people’ I feel privileged to call many of them ‘friends’. Whilst we have had a cracking start to this campaign I’m sure that I will have a few ‘darker moments’ and have cause for sleepless nights. With the players at our resources this year and the amount of quality involved in the running of the team I for one intend to enjoy this season and whilst we may or may not gain some form or silverware I hope that we provide formidable opposition in what promises to be a cracking 2009/10. I would encourage all involved with Notts Police FC to realise what a great Club we have, put away any frustrations you may feel through the year, conduct yourselves in a positive manner, do your best for the cause but above all enjoy the moment.
