In 1964 a works football team was formed by a local building contractor George Dew within twelve moths a young man called Ken Hughes became involved with the team and this was the start of Oldham Town F.C. For two seasons the team played Sunday football In the Blackley amateur league with their ground at Platt sports club before playing Saturday football and a move to the South East Lanc’s League. As the team grew stronger they sought a move to a higher standard of football, next stop, where they finished top and gained promotion to the A Division. After several seasons in the A division it was time to move on and into the Lancashire Combination League in 1981. Only one season was played in the league before it amalgamated with the Cheshire League which saw the formation of the North West Counties League. The team was placed into Division three. Season 1985/1986 saw the team, now called Oldham Town F.C. gain promotion to division 2. Through all this that same young man now resigned as team manager to take up the position as club chairman. Major honours had so fall eluded the club with wins in the Petit Cup and the Isle of Man the only real triumphs until 1991/1992 when the team became the West Houghton Cup Finalists defeating Atherton LR and Salford City on the way to the final where they were defeated by Little Hulton. 1991/1992 saw the start of a new youth policy with teams competing at under 14’s and under 15’ level. The clubs faith was well justified with 5 Trophies secured including two league cup doubles along with the prestigious County Cup. The following season the youth side did the club proud again by finishing league runners up and winning the Rochdale under 16’s league and cup finalist.
1992/1993 brought Town a good season in which they finished third with both sides meeting each other in the Whittle Cup Final. Season 1994/1995 Town missed out on the Championship by a final day home defeat by Flixton.Town finished runners up but were denied promotion because of ground grading. The reserves also came runners up and Cup Finalist in the Cup. 1997/1998 season saw Oldham Town take an early lead in the second Division and go on to win league, but yet again ground grading denied them promotion. 2006/2007 season Town finished sixth in the league, and reached the final of the Division two Trophy but lost on penalties to New Mills.
