The History of Oldham Town F.C.

In 1964, a works football team was formed by a local building contractor George Dew within twelve months a young man called Ken Hughes became heavily involved with the team and this was the start of Oldham Town F.C. For two seasons the team played sunday football in the Blackley amatuer league with their ground at platt sports club before playing saturday football and a move to the South East Lancashire League. As the team grew stronger they sought a move to a higher standerd of football, and amove to the Manchester Industial League Division B was their next stop, where they finished top and gained promotion to the A division.
After several seasons in the A Division it was time to move on and into the Lancashire Combination League in 1981. Only one season was played in the league before it amalgamated with the Cheshire league which saw the formation of the North West CountiesLeague. The team was placed into Division three.
Season 1985/86 saw the team now called Oldham Town F.C.gain promotion to division two.Through all this that same young man now resigned as team manager to take up the position Club Chairman.Major honours had so far eluded the club with wins in the Petit Cup and the Isle of Man the only real triumphs until 1991/1992 when the team became the West Houghton Cup Finalists defeating Atherton L.R. and Salford City on the way to the final where they were defeated 3-2 by Little Hulton. 1991/1992 saw the start of a new youth policy with teams competing at under 14's and under 15's level. The clubs faith was well justified with 5 trophies secured including two league cup doubles along with the prestigious County Cup. The following season the youth side did the club proud again by finishing league runners up and winning the Rochdale under 16's League and cup finalists. 1992/1993 brought Town a good season in which they finished third with both sides meeting each other in the Whittle Cup Final. Towns best ever season was 1994/1995 when they missed out on the championship by a final day home defeat by Flixton. The reserve side also came runners up and were also finalist in the Cup. Oldham Town should have been promoted , but ground grading denied them the their plce in Division 1 as it had also done to Haslingden the year before. 1197/1998 season saw Oldham Town take an early lead in the second Divison and go on to win the second division handsomely, yet again Town were denied promotion by the ground grading committee.
