Season 2005/2006 |
The Old Lyonians first eleven completed the task tonight beating Bank of England 1-0 at Roehampton. This is an incredible achievement as the first eleven had to win their last three matches to catch Alleyne Old Boys. Top scorer and in his first season as captain Neil Cheetham got the goal around the 75 minute mark. I have been reliably informed that the goal was reminiscent of the strike that crashed Michael Owen onto the world stage when he scored against Argentina in the 1998 World Cup. The game was fairly even but once the Lyons went ahead they never looked like losing it. The second place finish is all the more remarkable considering the Lyons narrow goal difference (only the 5th best in the league). The team have shown remarkable spirit to bounce back after heavy defeats to Alleyne Old Boys twice (who must be rueing the amount of drawn games) and Bank Of England. The original Bank defeat may have aided the promotion charge, allowing minds to be focussed, as the consequent 3 games left no room for error. The highlight of the season could be ending the unbeaten run of East Barnet that provided the platform for the Lyonian strong finish. Congratulations to Neil, Ali and the lads.
The historians are busy argueing whether this is indeed the first time the senior soccer team have been in the top flight or a return after 70 odd years. Either way this considerable achievement is coupled with an exiting proposal for playing next season which has the potential to move the whole club forward. Watch out for an anouncement during the Summer months.
