It was always going to be a tough match against last years league champions. Unicorn had gone the whole season remaining unbeaten in the league.
However, our own form in 2010, gave us lots of confidence going into the match, we had been beaten only twice in the league, once by Unicorn (losing 5-3, with them getting the fifth very late in the match) and by the runners up Broadheath were we were playing at point with only 7 players (one of whom was injured). So were not going to be intimidated.
It would have to be a very disciplined performance for us to do well, and the lads attitude was fantastic from the start.
Unicorn unsurprisingly had a lot of early pressure, but through hard work (and not luck) we kept them at bay.
Luke chased back to clear off our goal line as did James.
Between the defensive work Daniel M had a dangerous cross goal shot, while Niall pulled off a great save when a Unicorn forward was free to the left of our penalty area.
Unicorn forced a series of corners, from which Scott did really well to repell any danger on several occasions with some fantastic clearing headers.
So at half time we were encouraged by our first half performance, on this huge Unicorn pitch.
It didn-t take long before we scored!! Adam G released Jahmarly on the right of the box who crossed dangerously for Daniel M who-s shot hit the keeper, falling kindly for Jack who did not have to be asked twice to put in the back of the net.
Daniel then hit a shot narrowly over the bar, and Unicorn were getting worried!!
However, a well worked piece of play by Unicorn resulted in a melee in the box with a good finish.
Still at 1-1, we had lots to play for.
Unfortunately, a few pieces of team indecision were all Unicorn needed, and they capitalised three more times (the third goal being an exceptional finish), to make the final score 4-1 which honestly was very harsh on our lads as with 15 minutes to go we were winning. The highest standards are what is required to do well in Division One, and I-m sure the lads will use this as motivation to do better next week.
