Urmston Meadowside

Due to the arrival of the fair at Woodsend, our last fixture of the season had to be moved to Flixton Fields where we welcomed local rivals Urmston Meadowside. Meds needed victory to become Division 1 champions, we needed the win for local pride. And in what turned out to be a cracker of a game, the lads put in a spirited team effort and were worthy winners of the derby.
After a bright opening, Dan M had a great opportunity 15 minutes into the 1st half only to see his shot go narrowly wide. The Lions slick breaks were causing problems for the Meds defenders and it felt like a matter of time before we would score. The 1st half ended 0-0 and the lads knew they had a great opportunity to finish the season with a win. But Meds had other ideas and started strongly in the 2nd half and missed a gilt edged chance to take the lead, hitting the bar from a couple of yards out before the ball bounced away to safety (no Russian linesman today). The near miss seemed to galvanise the Lions and they started to stretch the Meds defence. Jack and Dan M had a couple of one on ones but the Meds keeper was having a blinder in the big goals. Eventually, the pressure told and from a corner, Luke bravely attacked the ball and bundled it into the net. The boys were on a roll now and with just a few minutes remaining, Dan M broke through the Meds defence and drilled a low drive into the bottom corner. Fair play to Meds who, with only seconds left to play scored with a beauty from distance.
Overall a terrific team performance with Luke MOM for a solid defensive display ably supported by Niall, Ryan, Tom, and Tyrele. This performance should leave the boys in good spirits for the start of next season. Congratulations must go to Unicorn for winning the league and Meadowside for coming runners up.
