It's amazing how fast a season whizzes by. Despite the awful weather that caused havoc with our form and fixture calendar, which at times didn't see us get together for a game for up to three weeks, the season still came and went in what felt like a blink of an eye.
To say we didn't have it all our own way this season would be quite an understatement. We had a pretty dismal season if truth be told. It was a really shame as we showed so much promise during the closed season. Preseason training was excellent, mainly due to the fact that the whole club got together as one, thanks to the good work of our Chairman Ozzy Powell. We also fared well during our preseason friendlies, winning away to Old Meadonians 9-0!
However, once we get stuck into the season proper, our squad at times, looked a little thin on the ground. Plagued by the lack of a proper goalkeeper and the fact that we were missing more than a few key players at the back, we suffered some heavy defeats early on against the likes of Fulham Compton OB (7-1) and John Fisher OB (4-1). It wasn't a great start and that bad form seemed to hang around like a bad smell all season. There were some high points however; the 9-1 away victory to Old Bromlieans was pretty satisfying, as was the excellent 4-1 away win against a tough Reigate 3rd Team. Overall however, we lost more games than we won and with it our season petered out safe in South 6 but nothing really to write home about.
Player wise, we've used more players this season than any other season I can remember. With our new club selection policy in full swing, we saw players use the revolving door more times than Avram Grant in his favourite knocking shop! The team used no less than a massive 55 players in total, which included 5 different goalkeepers, not to mention the two times Simon Suarez and Richard Scott played in goal!
The team also welcomed in new players Martin Haswell, Nathan Ward, Barry Lundie and Tom Donnelley, all of whom added quality and some much needed continuity to the team. Some key players were also missed, which didn't help our cause, with the likes of Phil Cook, Phil Kay and Steve Francis only managing to play a handful of games between them - and of course Greg Gardiner, who missed the whole season through injury!
However, despite all of our ups and downs both on and off the pitch, the season was just as enjoyable as any other. Every player who put on the OT’s shirt did they’re very best and I am immensely proud of the effort and commitment shown by everyone. I am extremely proud of the way we stayed strong and finished the season in 7th. We should have won more games but it just wasn't to be. Overall, it was a great effort in what was a transitional season for the 3rds.
