| Congratulations As Old Thorntonians 3rd's Finish As League Runners Up 06/07 |
The blood, the sweat, the tears and the tantrums! Was it all worth it? Of course it was. What a season we’ve had.
We saw new faces not only enter the fold but clearly establish themselves as major players. Keepers Cook and Minshaw were both brilliant and didn’t complain once despite having to rotate the green jersey. Leach, Boro and Gardiner all out preformed all expectations and new boys McClure and N’Gassa both doing well.
Old faces were back and did equally as well. Phil Cook bagging top scoring once again, Powell did a splendid job as my shadow and so did little voice, his first season as skipper. Even Sam Beard had a great season!
Performances along the way were, as a whole, very good. The highlight I think was the 8-0 thumping we gave eventual league champions Old Meads at the start of the season. However, there were lows. Losing to Meads at home in the dying seconds and giving away another late goal to City of London perhaps cost us the title.
Players left the squad. Sam Becks went back to middle earth. We lost the Face Man to the lights and glamour of the West End stage and Loz Upton’s only contribution this season was via email.
Injuries also played a massive part. Phil Cook missed a load of games with a broken heal, Face Man broke his hand, Steve Francis had a broken ankle then had problems with his thigh and I had a lengthy time out of the squad with torn bits in my knee. Even new boys Alistair McClure and Herbert N’Gassa had their problems.
There were some comedy highs; Chris '50p Head' Miles scoring a header. And there were some comedy lows; me missing a goal from 2 yards.
No yellow cards, despite Zee trying his best to get booked every game. But we had one red card – Dan Leach for his superman-like save on the goal line.
Our skipper was poisoned, Dom Shillingford got lost and Tony Powell hit the cross bar over and over again. We also managed to secure new sponsorship and bought a new away kit.
We had our annual Christmas party at Lucky Voice karaoke in Leicester Square, where Oleg Murphy wouldn’t let go of the microphone despite only knowing the words to one song -‘Mother Russia We Love You’. Some of us went to Estonia where some of us made friends with the local girls…Beard?! And we had many other nights out on the lash…including drinking beers at the Odeon Wimbledon watching Hot Fuzz.
Our End of Season Awards night came and went with huge success.
Dan Leach picked up Players Player of the Year. Charlie Lloyd scooped Managers Player of the Year. Phil Cook took the Golden Boot Award. Greg Gardiner was handed Club Man of the Year and John Murphy was handed his Outstanding Contribution Award on perhaps his last outing with the Old Thorns.
More importantly however, were the ‘Other Awards’. The Jonathan Smith Award for the clubs campest player went to Face Man. The Squads Big Issue Award for the Poorest Player went to Mark Boro. Dan Leach was awarded the ‘Keano Keano’ Award for the hardest player, whilst the 'I've just won a tenner on the horses so I've bought myself another crap t-shirt' award for the worst dressed player went to Robbo. The ‘Bambi on Ice’ Award for the worst dive or fall in a season was of course handed to Tony Powell who loved the face he had to stand up all night whilst wearing swimming goggles.
Overall lads the season was great fun and a huge success. 2nd place and promotion is the highest we have finished the league in a good few years.
