The original club was started in 1988 by Phil Barnden and Andrew Holt and was then known as KINGS CHURCH FC and played in the Eastbourne and District Churches League. At the end of the 1998-99 season this league ceased to exist and KINGS and a another church side Frenchgate combined to form Icthus United who entered the Eastbourne and District League finishing 3rd a feat not repeated untill l2007-08It was decided at the end of this season that the club should have a name that reflected the area the club plays in . Having played at OLD TOWN REC since 1988 the name OLD TOWN ATHLETIC was decided on. The last mens team to play under the Old Town name ceased to exist at least 10yrs ago and had apparently played at Old Town since the 1950s so the name and area of OLD TOWN will once again be represented in the town by a mens team. Having researched the history of Old Town teams the winner of The Sussex Senior cup nowadays contested by the likes of Brighton and Hove Albion Res,Eastborne Borough and Crawley Town to name a few was won by EASTBOURNE OLD TOWN way back in 1904. A NEW ERA. 2008
After a succesfull season 2007-08 reaching two cup finals the club applied to join The East Sussex League. This was succesfull and the club will play in Div 2 in the 2008- 09 season.
The clubs 1st season in the East Sussex League was a learning curve for players and managment alike.
The team was put in Div 2 based on the succsesfull season in 2007/08 in the Eastbourne League. It was felt we may be a little out of our depth a new manager Jimmy Siggins was brought in who strengthend the squad and by Christmas the team was still in with a chance of four thropies. However the succesfull cup runs reaching The Eastbourne Challenge cup Final a semi final and a quarter final beating several Div 1 sideson the way inevitabaly took its toll on the league performance. The team recorded too many draws and finished 5th in Div 2. Losing 4-2 to EASTBOURNE TOWN RES in the cup final .Who had allready won The Sussex County Res premier league title and the Res Leauge cup the team put up a creadibale performance.
Having learnt a lot from this season and with the vast majority of the squad staying together we look forward to a succesfull second season in The East Sussex League.
After a long season in a very competetive Div 2 Old Town had to settle for runners up spot as the title went to Peasemarsh who were awarded 3 pts for a game they lost when their opposition fielded an inelgable player, Both sides had identical records except we had a far superior goal diff but rules are rules.
We look forward to life in Div 1 for the 2010/11 season.
The target this season was to consilidate and settle into Div 1.
As expected the higher level turned out to be very competative but Town settled in well starting with a 1-1 draw against Bexhill and not loosing a league game untill Christmas. Contsantly in the top three positions and at the top for more weeks than not. The only blot on the copy book was the away form with all the away games ending up as draws wilst max points were taken at home. The Christmas period saw us loose twice including our first home league defeat to see us slump to fourth and a five horse race for the title start to develop. Huge wins over White Knight and Hollington II saw Town back in the hunt again. White Knight clinched the title and a last min goal away to Mountfield set up a final game away v Bexhill when the winners would be promoted Town held their nerve and put on an impresive performance recording a 3-0 win.
The season also saw an immpresive run in the prestigious Blacklands cup reaching the semi final beating three Premier sides and finally going out to eventual winners Polegate Town.
Another promotion to The East Sussex F.L. Premier Div means Town have gained intermediate status and enter step 7 of the football pyramid. Congratulations to the team for their achivement that has only been possiable due to the dedication and hard work over the last three seasons by manager Jimmy Siggins not forgetting Martin Stammers and Dom Barnden who have helped with coaching and training.
The club has a huge challenge next season on and off the pitch as we all step up to the higher level.
