Onslow completed their season with what might appear a comfortable win over old adversaries Yateley, but the final score tells only half the story. Yateley, with only nine players, perhaps deservedly led 1-0 at half time. The early signs were ominous for Onslow as the two man advantage had clearly entered their psychology, whilst Yateley displayed a carefree ‘nothing to lose’ attitude. They worked exceptionally hard and Onslow allowed them too much space, which proved costly after only 5 minutes when Yately took the lead. Initially it served to reinforce the teams’ respective mentalities but Onlsow began to find greater composure as the half wore on, creating a host of chances for Ben Stackhouse, Ollie Cose, Tom Giles, James Humphrys, LewisWest and Josh Warner, who grazed the crossbar. But none were converted and the anxiety was tangible.
Onslow’s half time team talk was about staying calm and playing their normal game, but making better use of the wings to stretch Yateley’s outnumbered defence. Substitutes Matt Coppinger, Adam Cooney and Charlie Hurman galvanised the team and it was Cooney who made the decisive breakthrough on 45 minutes when, having received the ball from Coppinger’s overlap, he showed quick feet to make space for his shot. We thought the floodgates would open and Stackhouse, Cooney and Hurnan all went close, but it was Giles who finally edged Onslow ahead after 58 minutes when he took an opportunity created by Hurman and Cose with a firm right foot finish. It sparked a period of mayhem as Onslow, in search of the killer goal, left themselves exposed at the back and were undone by a quick counter attack for Yateley, incredibly, to level the scores. Cose immediately restored his team’s lead when he drove home firm and low from Humphrys’s defence-splitting pass and within a minute Cooney crashed a shot onto the crossbar and into Giles’s path for a simple finish. There was time for Warner to scrape the crossbar again before Coppinger wrapped up the scoring with a long overlap and a trademark left foot drive. Stackhouse almost had the last say when his effort found the woodwork, but that was that.
