Season Archive

We almost made it.... Twice!!

Orbiston Utd's lack of pre-season matches showed after they struggled to assert any kind of pressure on a motivated Milton Rovers side in what was their only pre-season friendly game. However, they made an excellent start to the League season with a 10-0 win over Westwood Rovers from EK. The 'Orbie Boys' held top spot until Hallowe'en when they suffered an embarrassing 2-1 defeat against Wishaw. The Scottish Cup had also come and gone for the players when they were paired against Claremont Red. They restored some pride in the second half of that match after trailing 3-0 at the interval. The League season was still going strong despite the minor blip against Wishaw but the players suffered their next defeat in the Regional Cup before conceding a 2-0 lead in the following game, to lose 3-2, to put their hopes of finishing as League Champions almost beyond reach. Furthermore, Orbiston Utd were then deducted 12 league points as a direct result of teams folding which pushed us down the table. However, they maintained their challenge with 2 comfortable victories against Claremont Blue before failing to beat the other Claremont side, again, this time in the League Cup . It was almost 'GAME OVER' in mid-April when Orbiston Utd struggled to take a point from Milton Rovers who had raced into a 2-0 half-time lead. But hope was still there...

THEN CAME BLACKPOOL... for the fourth time in five years and without taking anything away from the previous three visits, this one was the best and most memorable. It was the final time we would be able to take part in such a tournament given the age restrictions we were only months away from experiencing. The players were also of the 'legal age' to consume copius amounts of alcohol!! There was some great football played, a memorable visit to a haunted house and THAT incident with the kettle, but they weren't enough to prevent a second successive Blackpool Cup Final ending in tears. EVERY player behaved themselves!! A great weekend had by all!

A 3-1 win at Kirkfield kept our League hopes alive and with 3 games to go it was in Orbiston Utd's hands... 3 wins would do it!
However, a stronger Wishaw side took the points in a 4-3 victory at the Rockburn. It was only the SECOND time in THREE YEARS we had lost a Home League match. A disappointing draw followed which allowed Wishaw to grab the silverware with one game remaining... against Orbiston Utd. In a game that will be remembered for so many reasons, Orbiston Utd won 2-1 with the official 'Goal of The Season' being scored that day. It was a great way to end the League season - beating the new champions in what was their only League defeat and at the same time, ensuring our own proud record of 2008/09 wasn't matched when we finished as UNBEATEN Champions.

Orbiston Utd then welcomed back some familiar faces in the end of season charity match between the current squad and the 2009 league winning squad. Orbiston Utd showed their class with a 9-1 trouncing of the 'Old Boys' after another great display of one-touch football. The final friendly match was a tight 4-3 win over Calderhill.

So we almost made it a very successful year twice over with a strong push for the League and the Blackpool Cup final.
