Memorable Matches Season 2006/07
30th September 2006
Berks & Bucks Intermediate Cup Rd 1
Padbury United FC Vs Buckingham Athletic
As soon as it had been announced weeks before, everyone had been talking up this match with the air of anticipation that would suitably follow a London Derby.
My reflections of the day are as follows:
Early start and ground preparation began on the fresh turf of Padbury playing fields.
With the grass cut and the lines clearly marked out the pitch looked exceptional along side the newly purchased goal posts and nets.
Anyone else that morning would have seen no difference between the usual preparations but I couldn’t stop wondering what if? What if we could pull something out of this game, Would we have a change of the much missed luck that had been deserting us for months and if not how would I pull the lads confidence up again?
The arduous tasks of match day prep’s soon shadowed any thoughts I was having of the forth-coming event until I was hanging the Kit up in my usual but precise way.
I haven’t, until recently, analyized what I go through before a game but on reflection I can see myself doing things almost with superstition and ritual. For instance, when I hang shirts up I always overlap them from the hooks so as to allow players to see their numbers when entering the changing rooms and I always fold every pair of socks the same way. Strange to some I’m sure but to me it’s just something that I do religiously.
With everything in place it wasn’t long before the first people were starting to arrive and the once quite clubhouse was buzzing with activity.
Team Sheets had been scrutinized and the player’s hurried themselves about preparing for the big event until a change of socks had to be enforced (by us strangely enough) otherwise the teams would clash. This wasn’t normally something that I would keep in my mind but I thought this was some’ what significant as some how it took all the anxiety away from the team and in a way subdued their nerves.
Just before Kick off as the players took their positions you could imagine them trying to focus on the game ahead, some trying to look confident against this team of strangers, some chatting nervously with other team mates and others just simply looking at the floor. Can they remember my instructions, will they be able to compete with this higher rated team, I thought. I know what these players are capable of but are they ready? Once they cross that white line much of this is out of my control.
The whistle blew and I instantly accepted the fate to come, good or bad.
The game had begun and Buckingham took the initiative immediately forcing the team back into our own half with clever and confident passes.
Individually we gave everything but as a unit we were clearly weak across the park.
Encouragement and motivation from the members of Padbury who had come to watch the match couldn’t prevent Buckingham taking a 10th minute lead with a precise header from a corner. Surprisingly this seemed to spur the lads on and it gave way to a greater push from our midfield. Mitchell Duckett had now found space in his defensive midfield role and his partner, Daniel Rothery was collecting passes more freely and being able to turn and run at goal. With all this attention of play now in our favour we found light in the fact that we could get something out of this poor start to the game. The pace of Lloyd Alara was starting to threaten the Athletic back four but unfortunately his end results left little to the imagination and his frustration was clearly evident (a clear problem that he has never grown out of). Although missed chances brought with it frustration, it showed me that we were positive in lots of other ways.
We all know that a playing style may be dropped to win matches or a direct route one approach can be adopted but this time we were starting to look quite attractive in our build up and equally resilient at the back.
With 20 minutes on the clock a clever move along our left hand side interlocking Kyle Duckett and Daniel Jones found Daniel Rothery in space and gave him the opportunity to feed through a pass to the advancing Daniel Toon. His run diagonally across the 18-yard box was met perfectly from the pass and with a touch for control he slotted home our equalizer low and direct into the opposite corner.
What a turn of fortunes, what a difference a goal makes. True in lots of ways but this now created stalemate between the two teams and as much as one team attacked the other defended. Certainly the better chances were falling to our opposition and I couldn’t wait to get the team in at half time so that I could rearrange and inspire the team with some drilled out words that managers develop over the course of time.
There were to be no changes at half time, no injuries and everyone clearly keen to get stuck in for the next 45 minutes. With the 2nd half on it’s way you couldn’t really distinguish any difference in playing styles of both teams compared to the first half. This only showed that my opposite number was playing as cautious as me and wouldn’t commit to any flamboyant tactics until it was absolutely necessary. With our full time goalkeeper, Paul O’Driscoll, out injured for the past week, Carl Rivenberg had reluctantly taken the gloves and was showing his capable abilities between the posts.
With every attempt Buckingham could have easily have taken the lead but for exceptional saves and the rush of blood that the Athletic forwards were having inside our 18 yard box. Except for the battered corner flags that the Buckingham forwards had been shouting at all afternoon nothing was damaged in our half of the pitch and our goal was intact. As the game was now entering it’s last quarter I was forced to make a substitution. I say forced as I was determined not to change much on the pitch because it was so tight. Determination and pride was pushing all the players into 5th gear and not one would appreciate coming off the pitch before the final whistle.
This time though one of our new and up and coming talents Craig Chaplin was exhausted and I couldn’t expect him to push out the last 15 minutes without causing injury to himself. He had already exceeded my expectations but now he gave way to another player of the same calibre, Matt Marsden.
Athletic had already used their three subs by the time Matt was running on to the pitch and hurriedly passing on my instructions to other players. I know what I wanted and the players clearly where indicating the same things. We had to push hard but still work as a unit otherwise one of these missed chances that Athletic was creating would inevitably become a goal.
With the final whistle looming we mounted two consecutive attacks at the Athletic goal. By this time all but the two central defenders were attacking us on all fronts, which gave us an opportunity to break on them. Chances fell to Daniel Toon and Mitchell Duckett but both of their efforts were blocked out by defenders until Daniel Rothery’s half volley was spilled by the Athletic Keeper and out for a corner.
Matt Marsden curled the resulting corner into the box only for it to be deflected away and out by a defender to safety. Covering on the left, Kyle Duckett returned the ball with his first time cross whilst the defence walked out of their area Leaving Lloyd Alara able to out jump and loop home his header. 2-1 up and ecstatic now. We’ve had this roller coaster of a ride and endured almost everything but it’s not over yet, 5 minutes left and this Referee will certainly play every second of it and more.
Things are louder now from both sets of dugouts and words equally of criticism and encouragement echo from the ever-growing crowd of spectators. Yellow cards are produced from various areas of the field and time stands still when dangerous set pieces are let lose on defences. Calm down! Calm down! That’s what I want to get through to the players but with every touch of the ball they become more engrossed in the confusion and excitement of the game.
With what seemed like a lifetime, the game was eventually drawn to an end with the sound of the final whistle. Celebrations followed on and off the pitch as I made my way towards the visibly dismayed Athletic players and staff to applaud them but the increasing amount of my own players interrupting me with their cheers made the event short and sweet.
May I hope that we all encounter these days again as it shows that all the hard work and dedication that we all put into football is certainly worth it.
