After the success of the inaugural fixture last season, the return of the Inter-Panthers Challenge again brought with it much excitement & anticipation, not to mention eager speculation over team selections.

After a long & drawn out scientific process, involving hours of head scratching, long caffeine fuelled nights agonising over endless permutations & formulae, the initial draft squads immerged - and after further player bargaining & transfer dealings were finally completed, the squads were eventually announced.

Rivalries began to heat up as soon as the players arrived at Barn Elms, the Giants seeking to gain early psychological advantage by commandeering the first team kit, the Marvels emerging from the changing rooms wearing the red third kit.

After briefly appearing from the changing rooms to berate the opposition, the Giants players disappeared back inside for a prolonged team talk & tactics discussion, with their manager keen to impress upon his players the magnitude of the forthcoming contest.

Conversely, the team in red strolled casually towards the pitch, preparing themselves mentally & taking in the atmosphere of the occasion. Once onto the pitch side, the Marvels began acclimatising themselves with some preliminary light ball work, whilst their manager was busy pumping up balls & contemplating match tactics.

With still no sign of any blue shirts emerging from a prolonged, obviously impassioned team talk, the opportunity was taken for the Marvels to gather together to go through the starting eleven, and to discuss the game plan designed to bring about the Giants demise.

A short while into his master plan, the Marvels boss was crudely interrupted as opposition manager Hurrell appeared, confidently leading his troops onto the field. With intimidatory tactics still being employed, the Blue Menace parked themselves deliberately within earshot, and following taunts of having pre-empted the reds' formation, the Giants boss gleefully claimed a psychological victory, as the Marvels were forced to retreat further away to complete their preparations.

The reds' manager was un-phased, however. His adversary's predictions were close, but he knew that they were fundamentally flawed.

Confident of having gained a valuable advantage, the Giants boss led his team away to begin their warm up, and it wasn't long before the bibs & cones were out, & the blue outfit were regimentally going through their paces. The red response, in a cleverly veiled ploy of reverse psychology – "we're not going to bother with bibs & cones – go grab yourselves a ball & start kicking it about..." Genius? Or just pure laziness? Only time would tell...

The game finally kicked off, and both teams were quickly into their stride. The teams appeared fairly evenly matched, with the Giants opting for a 3-5-2 system, with a strong centre mid trio threatening to cause problems for the Marvels. The reds had been well briefed, however, and countered with a 4-4-1-1 formation, the emphasis on the full backs pressing high onto the opposition wing-backs, and releasing the wingers, Mary D & Foxy whenever possible. With Costi & Hannah working hard to neutralise the threat through the middle, the Marvels managed to contain the early Giants threat, and on 15 minutes, the deadlock was broken when Thea played in Mary D, whose right foot strike found its way underneath Sophia to give the Marvels the lead.

However, Giants heads did not go down and they pressed for an equaliser - the midfield trio of Amy M, Sim & Tara combining well to move the ball forward, and Karen & Dona up front beginning to give the Marvels back four cause for concern. Despite the tactics to neutralise the Giants wing-backs, both Emma Jesse & Mary R were having a certain amount of success in breaking down the flanks – much to the concern of the Marvels manager – and it came as some relief to those in red that after 21 minutes, a left foot strike from Thea found its way inside the Giants' right hand post to double the lead.

The second goal certainly dealt a blow to blue hopes, and the two goal cushion gave the Marvels added confidence, prompting the first change, Kerrie coming on for the reds. A further change in personnel shortly after saw Tess introduced, and on 41 minutes, the Marvels delivered the killer blow, Thea grabbing her second goal, this time with a right foot strike which found its way in off the far post.

A comfortable lead at half-time for the Marvels, which in fairness, probably flattered the team in red somewhat. The Giants were certainly giving them a good game & were a little unlucky to be three goals adrift. So - with the manager reminding them that if they were to let their opponents back into the game from three goals up, they would never hear the end of it – the Marvels started the second half looking to close out the game.

An attacking change saw Liz introduced into the Giants midfield for the second half, and the blues started strongly, again pressing to get a foot-hold back into the game. But unfortunately, the result was put beyond any doubt seven minutes after the restart – a ball in behind the Giants defence saw Mary D chasing to get on the end of it, but Mary R, chasing back, seemed to have the danger covered. However, a mix-up with Sophia in goal allowed Mary D to steal in & poke the ball past Sophia to seal the Giants' fate.

With nothing to lose now, the team in blue continued to battle to get something, if at least some pride, out of the game. With the Marvels manager busy re-arranging his personnel, the reds now had the luxury of easing off the pressure a little, and this allowed the Giants to press forward once more, looking for a consolation goal at least. Twenty minutes into the second half it looked as if they would get some reward, as a Giants attack put the Marvels defence under some pressure, and the ball was eventually cleared. A couple of minutes later, Mary R managed to beat Mary D (now playing on the left wing for the reds as a result of a half-time switch, cunningly designed to confuse), and put a dangerous cross into the Marvels penalty area. Dona glanced the ball on, and Tara met the ball, only to see her effort go over the bar.

Having come close, the Giants felt confident that they could get on the scoresheet, and came close on several occasions. However, with about 20 minutes left, came the incident which marred the afternoon a little. Having won a corner, the Giants pushed players up into the Marvels box looking for the elusive goal. As the ball came across, Hannah, as she had been doing all afternoon, was there to attack the incoming ball. Having cleared the danger, however, it soon became apparent that all was not well, as unfortunately, she had clashed heads with Alex and taken a nasty knock to the head. Having come off worse, her headband having unfortunately complicated the situation, the game was immediately halted while Hannah was treated. Due to the nature of the injury, an ambulance was soon called, and after having arrived, Hannah was checked over & taken away.

Obviously events on the pitch were now secondary, however it was decided that the game should restart, to play out the remaining 15 minutes. The Giants continued to press forward, and were finally rewarded two minutes after the re-start. The ball was put into the Marvels box from the right, and following an assist by Mags – although I’m not sure how much she knew about it, the ball deflecting off her head(!) – the ball fell to Sim in front of goal, and she calmly struck it left footed past Syan. Giants finally on the scoresheet, and deservedly so.

The rest of the game played out with no further goals however, to give the Marvels a convincing 4-1 victory.

An enjoyable and hard fought game throughout, as I'm sure everyone will agree, despite Hannah's unfortunate incident. (It was later confirmed that the injury wasn’t as bad as first suspected, and that despite having taken a nasty knock to the head, no stitches were required).

I would say that although on balance the reds edged it on the day, the scoreline was a little unfair on the Giants, and didn’t truly reflect the contest as a whole. And far be it from me to gloat about the result – I am a man of far too much integrity for that. Jon doesn't need me to highlight the fact that despite his premature pre-empting of our formation, he was, strategically, thoroughly out-manoeuvred. So I won't.

Well played to everyone who took part – not just an enjoyable game, but good practice & another opportunity for Jon & myself to see you all in action, and also some new faces.

For the Giants, Jon has selected Alex as his Panther of the Week – an excellent debut game in a Panthers shirt, defending solidly alongside Kate at the heart of the defence. Well played Alex.

For the Marvels, it's a complete no-brainer. Having opted to go for a two-man centre-mid against the Giants midfield trio, and with Costi given licence to push forward, Hannah was key to our victory - and she battled & defended the midfield area brilliantly. And on the now slightly delicate subject of 'zonal marking' – Hannah, having expressed her 'reservations' pre kick-off, defended every corner perfectly, attacking the ball & clearing it every time. Although she still managed to tell me how she felt about it whilst lying on her back with blood running from her head – sorry Hannah!

Thankfully, she's now fine and is without doubt, my Panther of the Week.

So, despite the mis-hap, another successful & enjoyable Inter-Panthers Challenge – here's to the next one...

Brighton Tournament (19/08/07)
Date: 28/08/07
Well, after the baking heat of the first pre-season game, summer returned for the Brighton tournament. Apparently it has been the same every time we play there (thanks for telling me guys!). Despite the grey skies and rain, however, the squad were in good spirits and raring to go.

We made our way over to the pitch which would be our base for the first group stage, and rumours were circulating that we had "an easy group". Call me an old cynic but experience has taught me that there's no such thing. And so it turned out.

Due to everyone’s prompt arrival we had time for a proper warm-up and chat before the first match. As the 3-5-2 formation had worked so well for Russ the previous week we decided to stick with it, as we had the same back three available (and we know Kate prefers that formation).

Our first game was against Milford & Whitley, and for once we came out of the traps running. To be fair the opposition were poor, but we still had to play football. We took control from the off and within five minutes had crafted the opener when Emma Jesse tapped in after Vicky Moore's effort was saved. And got injured in the process. A disappointing end to her tournament, especially as her parents hadn't even arrived to witness her cameo!

Despite our dominance and possession the opposition battled hard and we had to work hard for our next goal which was converted by Vix. The third was an own goal after a goalmouth scramble. Scrappy but deserved.

All in all the perfect start to the tournament (barring the injury to Emma). Six points (a point was awarded for every goal scored) and top of the group (or so we thought, but actually we were joint top as Brighton had already played and had also won by the same score).

One learning point to come out of the game was with substitutions. Players could sub on and off as required when the ball was dead, as long as the referee was informed. However there was no time for team instructions at half-time (the game being split into two fifteen minute halves), so we decided that changing five players simultaneously was not a good idea and would not be repeated!

Our second game was straight after the first, so we had ten minutes to turn things around. We rested a couple of players but stuck to the same formation. Crawley Wasps proved much tougher opposition and gave us a good game, but we scored early through Vix and managed to defend that lead right to the final whistle.

The only slight downside to the game was a booking for Bownesy for swearing (at no-one in particular it must be said). Whilst the booking was probably justified the patronising manner in which the ref administered it was not.

So two wins from our opening games and now a lovely ninety minute break before the next game. And the rain had stopped. What more could the team ask for? Probably a nice bacon sarnie from the burger van, but the eating of any such muck had been forbidden by the manager. Except for himself of course. And yes it tasted as good as it looked girls!

Our third game was against the team I expected to be the best in the group – Brighton Reserves. And so it turned out to be. Despite dominating possession once again we failed to convert any chances and were guilty of not getting players inn the box to meet one of the excellent crosses being provided by our wingbacks.

We were also guilty of not closing players down quickly enough outside the box, which led to Brighton's only opportunity of the first half. The girl in question didn't hesitate to shoot and the ball went past a despairing dive from Syan and in off the post. It was against the run of play but a momentary lack of concentration had cost us.

We tried our best to grab an equaliser but failed to make the most of the excellent openings created on the wings, and in the hunt for an equaliser we conceded a second. Worse still was the fact that Kelly – who was booked during the game for suggesting the ref wasn’t keeping up with play – was subsequently sent off after the final whistle. We await the official reason from the FA however the immediate problem was that she was banned for the last group game.

So another long wait lay ahead before our final game, in which time the world's top mathematicians were busy calculating the various permutations whilst the other group games were being played out. Because of the "point a goal" rule we had to wait for these to finish to be sure, but a defeat for Brighton in their final game meant that we needed to win – and score five goals – to top the group and progress.

By this stage we had injuries to Emma Jesse, Amy B, Vix, Krista, Syan, and Kelly suspended, so the starting line-up pretty much picked itself. A stirring team talk by the management team roused the troops, who knew that a big win was required. No team that we knew of had scored more than three goals in their matches so we knew this was a big ask.

As expected the players rose to the challenge and had the opposition under pressure for the start of the game right to the final whistle. Everyone busted a gut to make tackles and make runs, with Bownesy and Amy McM covering every inch of turf between them. Steph and Mary D finally got a reward for all their hard work throughout the tournament with a goal each. Lucia and Dona chipped in too and despite throwing all caution to the wind and moving Kate into midfield for the final few minutes we ended up winning 4-0, one goal short of what we needed.

All was not lost, however, as a quick scan of the rules revealed that – as we were now joint top with Brighton – a penalty shoot-out would decide who would progress to the semi-final. Cue much discussion and avoiding catching the manager's eye as we sought the five players who would be brave enough to step up to the mark.

In the end the brave few were Amy B, Kelly, Steph, Vix and Kate. While the penalty takers (and reserves should it go the whole way) huddled in the centre circle the spectators and management were ordered off the pitch to watch nervously. The first four penalties were scored comfortably by both teams, though Syan almost got to one. Then our fifth penalty was saved and Brighton scored to take them top of the group.

Whilst disappointing to lose in such a way we were by far the most positive and organised team in our group, and would have been worthy winners. However, bearing in mind the injuries we had sustained it was a blessing in disguise to get knocked out.

Well done to everyone that played and thanks to the few who turned up to support. It was fun and a good learning experience. Though one pompous referee tried his best to spoil our day it all ended well and we'll be back next year to ensure justice is done!

Inter-Panthers Challenge (12/11/06)

Lucinda’s Legends ..................3
Kelly Foster (2), Jeanette Dern

Mary R’s All Stars ...................3

(Mary R’s All Stars win 3-1 on penalties)

Mary R's match report...

Finally, the most hotly anticipated fixture of the Reserves season was upon us this Sunday, as Lucinda’s Legends and Mary R’s All Stars met to do battle in the Inter-Panthers Challenge. The announcement of the squad lists led to mixed speculation on who the favourites were, and despite my concerted efforts to encourage certain opponents to get drunk the night before, the teams seemed pretty evenly matched at the start of play. The Legends undoubtedly had a very strong midfield with Helen and Jeanette combining in the centre and Costi just in front. Yet the All Stars had new star defender Simona holding the fort at the back, and were armed with a lot of striking power, with a few of us ready to ruffle up Skinner in the opposition goal. Whilst the Legends opted for a solid 3-4-2 formation, the All Stars decided to try and win it in midfield and went for a 3-5-1. The changing room played host to a lot of amusing pre-match rivalry, my favourite moment being when I was informed that Lucinda was making us wear the red shirts and them their own white tops, based on the logic that: “You’ll find it harder to mark us if we’re not wearing numbers”. Hmm…doesn’t quite work when you know everybody’s name, Lu. Nice try though…

I was a little concerned that at 13.55 Rowan and myself were having to contemplate a 1-1 formation, but the other All Stars were just adopting the ‘fashionably late’ philosophy and turned up in the nick of time, putting my rigorous warm-up plans to waste – a lucky escape, girls.

We delayed kick-off a little to enjoy watching our 1st team friends score within the first minute, inspiring us all to go out and perform. The first half started very competitively as both teams went out hard and tried to gain an early advantage. The first ten minutes saw the Legends build up a lot of pressure inside our half, and they undoubtedly had the better of the opening period. This culminated when Ruth broke forward to smash a long-range effort against the underside of the crossbar. Controversial moment number one of the day, as some of the Legends thought the ball might have bounced down over the line, but no goal was given and we managed to clear it. Suddenly the game really took off, when the All Stars broke forward and scored the opener against the run of play, after around 15 minutes. Foxy broke down the wing from a great pass from Vicky inside, cutting inside and firing from the edge of the box into the top right corner. A scorcher of a goal to set the tone for the day.

This goal settled the All Stars and we began to dominate a little, using our width well. We had a few good attacks into their final third, and won a couple of corners, but ultimately found it hard to get it past the likes of Lucy and Ruth, immense presences at the back for the Legends. However, another quick break around the half-hour mark saw us get it back in the net. Almost a carbon copy of the first, Foxy again released down the left wing and driving past the helpless Skinner. Even her infamous ‘asbestos knees’ couldn’t help her dive down and save this lethal strike, and we took a good lead at 2-0.

With half-time calling, play remained pretty level, with chances falling for both teams and a lot of hard battling going on in the centre of the pitch. The Legends were working things well in the middle with Jeanette, Helen and Costi putting on some great passing, and Costi causing no end of problems to our defence with her usual acrobatics and overhead kicks. Thankfully all trouble was mopped up by our defence, Simona in particular proving extremely reliable in getting rid of anything that came towards our goalmouth, with some extremely composed defending at centre-back.

The balance soon swung again, however, as the Legends pulled one back. Undoubtedly controversial moment number two of the match. As Jeanette got ready to take a free-kick just inside our half, we paid attention to work the off-side trap and try and catch them out. Had Costi not been laughing and grinning as she steamed metres ahead of our defence, we might have believed her that we were seeing things and she wasn’t actually way off-side, but the referee (some shady character by the name of Colston) obviously thought she was just pleased with her lay-off to Kelly, who opened the scoring for the Legends. To be fair though, there were a few confessions at half-time that Ruth’s shot had actually gone in, and so it seemed that justice was done.

For the second half we moved Simona into the middle to try and strengthen up that area of the pitch, which I think worked quite well. We began to match their passing, but the Legends nicked an early goal to level the scores, Jeanette firing home from the edge of the box.

The next 30 minutes were extremely tense with everyone working hard and the play evenly spread across the two halves. Some excellent football, although the game was not without its comedy moments, particularly when I decided to smash the ball into my own face off a throw-in, giving myself a totally self-induced nosebleed. Smooth.

As penalties loomed with ten minutes to go, there was a sudden burst of activity to create a tense end to the match. With less than ten minutes to go I was released forward by a great ball over the top from Vicky. With Ruth on my shoulder I had to get a shot off quickly and managed to put the ball over Skinner’s head from the edge of the box to make it 3-2. I was hoping with less than five minutes left that that might just have sealed a notorious victory, but the Legends had other ideas, and with as little as two minutes left Kelly broke down the left fantastically and fired home an unstoppable shot, out of Rowan’s reach and into the top right corner.

So, somewhat inevitably, penalties decided the match. I put in the first to put the pressure onto the Legends, and then a string of saves from both keepers and a very unlucky encounter with the crossbar for Vicky left it tense at 1-0 with only two pens left each. Foxy put in our fourth to seal her hat-trick for the day and ensure the Legends had to score. But Helen did, meaning it was 2-1 to us with one each to go. As Skinner was now forced to save our fifth to stay in it, I was quite amused by her reaction of simply crying out an expletive in despair when she turned round and realised that it was Simona stepping up to take it.. And indeed, she smacked it into the roof of the net to seal the win at 3-1. A fantastic performance by both keepers, but ultimately, victory was handed to the All Stars.

I think everyone agreed that this was not only a hugely enjoyable thing to do but also a really useful experience for us all; it’s testimony to how much our squad has built up and improved in recent weeks that we all unanimously agreed that this was by far the hardest match we have played this season, and sets us in good stead for our forthcoming encounter with the league leaders. There were some very strong performances on both sides. I can’t mention all 20 of you because this is already far too long, but particular mentions: Impressive debuts from Katie and Mags, not to mention Simona who bossed our defence and played some great balls upfield. For the Legends, Jeanette was hugely instrumental in the middle, with Costi injecting her usual dose of skill and flair and getting very well-acquainted with the mud. Strong performances as always from Ruth and Lucy at the back. For us, Vicky had a great game pressurising their defence and playing some very nifty touches wide and forward, and I think I’m right in saying she made two quality assists for the goals. The quality of the finishing from both teams also goes to show that we really do have some potent goal-scoring weapons in our squad. I don’t think there was anything the keepers could have done about any of the six goals. Despite the all-round quality, the Panthers of the Week are an easy choice. For the All Stars, it has to be our vulpine star, Miss Fox. Two cracking strikes, endless attacking pressure and neat passing down our left-wing, and then a really solid performance when I moved her back into defence. Lucinda has quite rightly picked Jeanette as the POTW for the Legends. Controlling the midfield with ease, playing some great balls forward and wide, and a fine goal as well. A great performance from both players reflecting what was a great match.

Sussex FA Tournament
Date: 20/08/06
On Sunday 20th August the club made a return to the Sussex FA Football Festival, which we had reached the semi final of last year. Unfortunately it wasn't to be this time around, and we exited at the first group phase to begin the long journey home. Details below ...

Squad: Helen Skinner, Emma Bownes, Ruth Emblin, Kelly Barton, Lucy Thomas, Charlotte Higgins, Amy Butcher, Ashley Henley, Carolyn Simpson, Emma Jesse, Karen O'Neill, Emma Barnbrook, Lucinda Clements, Mary Richards, Vicky Moore

Panthers WFC 0 Hailsham Ladies 2
============================
The early morning start seemed to have got the better of us, as we never really got going in this game, and a goal in each half for Hailsham left us facing an early setback.

Panthers WFC 1 Crawley Down 1
=========================
We were extremely disappointed to come away from a game we dominated with just a point. A first half strike from Emma Jesse from a narrow angle gave us the lead, but we switched off at the start of the second half and allowed a Crawley player far too much time and space to smash home from 20 yards. This setback seemed to raise us, but the winning goal our play deserved proved elusive.

Panthers WFC 0 Rottingdean Village 2
==================================
Already effectively out of the competition, we turned in our best performance to date for the first 25 minutes of this game. There was nothing between the sides, with Ashley Henley being deployed in a man marking role to neutralise Rottingdean's dangerous right midfielder, with her performance in this role limiting the opposition's attacking prowess and allowing us to mount attacks of our own. Unfortunately keeper Helen Skinner, who had been outstanding to this point, misjudged a long range shot to give Rottingdean the lead with a couple of minutes left. As we threw players forward an unstopable header from a corner doubled their lead and left us with a defeat that we hadn't really deserved.

Panthers WFC 1 Whitehawk 1
=======================
In the final game we turned in our best performance of the day, and showed people what we really can do. How we only scored one goal is anyone's guess, although I have to confess to not having a clue who got our goal as it seemed to ricochet off several people before being adjuged to have crossed the line. Alas, our luck deserted us again when a Whitehawk player completely miss hit a shot late in the game, only to see it loop up in the air and over the stranded Skinner.

It was just one of those days, but several good things came out of the day. Three new signings, Amy Butcher, Carolyn Simpson and Charlotte Higgins all made their first appearances in a Panthers shirt, showing plenty to suggest that they will become important players during the season. Several existing players gained valuable experience in new positions that will stand them in good stead going forward, and most importantly everyone got valuable 11-a-side football experience ahead of the new season. The Panthers player of the tournament was Vicky Moore, who performed superbly wherever she was asked to play and didn't look at all out of place alongside the more experienced regular 1st team players.
