Report

Saturday's game saw a repeat of the first game of the league season with Buxted visiting the WRMG in the last 'official' game of the season.

Town took a light hearted approach to their preparations, perhaps buoyed by the news the manager Stu Black had refrained from naming himself among the starting eleven! Town made a few changes from last week's defeat at East Grinstead, including keeper Aaron Brindley between the sticks.

After their intensive warm-up, Buxted had their serious faces on and were much sharper out of the blocks, dominating the first fifteen minutes of the game, unfortunately for them, their strike team were about as successful as a North Korean rocket!

Following the Asian theme to the game, Danny 'sumo' Wild, was introduced on 15 mins complete with Mawashi, due to an injury to Chris 'baywatch' Jackson. In order to keep the ball as far away from Wild as possible meant that town had to push forward and they were almost rewarded when lone striker Josh Preece somehow outpaced the Buxted full back but then very accurately put his shot straight down the keepers throat.

Town managed to build a sustained period of pressure, which led to a persistent Mark 'Ron Weasley' Davis slotting home from 14 yards.

Town kept pushing forward and an excellent run from Ben 'who' Smith almost created a chance for a second.

Half time arrived with both side creating nothing more than half chances. However Town possibly just deserved their half time lead.

The Town team emerged early after half time having, as usual, listened intently to Stuart Redknapp's halftime instructions.....! The second half began with more Town pressure and after 60 minutes finally town were able to breathe a bit easier, Lewis Harper replaced Danny Wild and the next five minutes were frequently interrupted with Town players needing treatment for their sore backs after carrying Wild. Harper had only flown in from Dubai ten hours before kick off but was collared by Bulla Black at the bookies an hour before the game, that'll teach you to gamble Lewis!!! However his jetlag didn't seem to pose him any problems and he was a constant threat on the left wing.

After some more good wide play from Ben Smith and nice one-two with Weasley, Smith stuck one in the onion bag to give Town some breathing space, a well deserved goal. Smith was suprised as anyone to hit the target with his left foot, let alone score a goal. As a reward for his goal, manager Black then substituted Smith and put himself up front, to cries of 'theres only one humpty dumpty'.

Black almost silenced the crowd with a clever little knee flick towards goal that the keeper only just managed to pluck out of the air. Buxted did have one last card to play and their late substitution created squeaky bum time for Polegate as the Buxted sub finished neatly with his very first touch.

Town did have another chance to take the lead but Preece thought that the ball looked much better imbedded in the rooftop of a neighboring house rather than Buxted's goalnet.

The striker then found a novel way of stopping himself from falling, by using his face! The argument in the pub afterwards was whether he looked better or worse because of the resulting face graze!

All in all, a pleasant end to an up and down season. Remember, next Saturday. Old Fogeys vs Young 'uns at the WMRG, 13:30 kick off.
