Portchester FC was Established in 1894.
The name Portchester comes from the Roman name Portceastre or Portceaster which means 'Fortified Town near a port'.
In the early days the team were nicknamed The Ploughboys because many of the players were agricultural workers.
Portchester Castle is haunted by the ghost of a monk, we could do with him right now!
Portchester FC have had a string of celebrity players...Ernie Walker being one...but the most famous is probably Arthur Conan Doyle.
Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was born on May 22, 1859, in Edinburgh, Scotland and died on Monday, July 7, 1930, surrounded by his family. His last words before departing for "the greatest and most glorious adventure of all," were addressed to his wife. He whispered, "You are wonderful." (YUK! GAG!).
However, legend suggests that his final Diary entry said…… “Portchester please pass the f”cking ball”! But then again he always did write fiction.
