Peter Symonds 3rd X1 5 - 3 Portsmouth College 3rd X1 Hants College League 22/10/08
Despite putting in a decent 1st half performance Pompey found themselves 2 goals down at half time courtesy of 2 defensive howlers. Firstly keeper James (Eminem) Gardener fumbled a long range effort and nosed the ball into his own net! Then Ash Brown (for breakfast) completely missed a simple clearance under no pressure on the edge of his box, allowing the Symonds striker to finish easily. Pompey did have enough chances to score but just couldn't deliver the goods, Parr, Oldfield, Chowdrey and Zaki all guilty of failing to find the net in the opening 45.
After the break the hosts began to put more pressure on the Pompey defence and enjoyed slightly more possession, but with a decent ref for the 2nd half play was allowed to continue more often allowing the visitor's physical side to prosper, and with Pompey quick to attack on the break continued to impress. Zaki's movement up front was proving too much for the Symonds defence as he led them on a merry dance, often finding himself in good scoring positions but firing wide...... way, way wide! Although Symonds scored 3 more goals, Pompey matched this with Zaki grabbing a couple and Chandler getting in on the act (with quite possibly the worst penalty seen for some time)! An encouraging performance and a lot of positives to be taken from the match, had we defended better and just taken a couple of those many chances it may have been a different story.
So Pompey may have travelled home on the mini bus as losers, but they remain the peoples champions, the voice of a generation, filling the hearts of every student with hope and joy, idolised by legions of female (and maybe in some cases male) groupies and stalkers. They arrived back at the college to be greeted by..............well, no-one really, but then again who needs fans anyway, once they start winning, or maybe even drawing, then the whole world will sit up and take notice of Dan Lattimor, Chris Collins and Tom Ryan. It won't be Oscar Ferneywho any more but "wow there goes Oscarinho, star of the 3rd team . Teenagers will no longer ask James Oldfield for tips on acting or expressing themselves, instead they will be asking him for tips on how to play football. One day......one day!
