2010/11 Season - Potters promoted to Premier Division!

Back in the Summer of 2007, a brand new men's team in the village of Borough Green were formed from scratch, and entered the Sevenoaks & District Football League's bottom tier, the Third Division for the 07/08 campaign.
Going by the name of Potters FC, in reference to their home ground of Potters Mede, local players from the age of 16 were drafted in to the team to make up the numbers, and this new club were to have an up and down debut season in men's football.

Just four years later however, Potters Football Club have grown rapidly to become one of the leading names in local football under the guidance of manager, Henry Willard, and following three successive promotions the club and it's fantastic, loyal squad now prepare for life in the Sevenoaks & District Premier Division.

Following Promotion to the First Division at the end of the 09/10 season, the summer pre-season of 2010 ahead of the 10/11 season was a busy one with several new faces arriving at Potters Mede, as well as a few departures.
Long-time servant Peter de-Kisshazy who clocked up over 50 appearances for the club, moved across the village to local neighbours Borough Green in the Third Division, vice-captain Joe Gransden was forced to leave following a job-move abroad, and both Mike Bateman and Steve Lee left the club to sign for Borough Green United Reserves in the Second Division.

Some big signings were to follow the departures however, bolstering the Potters squad even further for the challenge of Division One; These included defenders Olly Hayward and former Borough Green Juniors star Greg Francis, young striker Russ McEwan, and the signing of Chris Gubbins from rivals Wilderpark. These additions would later be joined by Sam Rhodes and Jonathan Funnell who signed for the club in January and February respectively.

A packed pre-season schedule in August/September 2010 saw Potters win five of their seven friendly games, and also embark on a fantastic tour of Holland and Germany in August, playing two friendlies against strong German opposition in the city of Aachen.

The league campaign kicked off in style with a 4-1 home win over Westerham on 18th September and a sizzling performance which saw a debut goal for new striker Chris Gubbins, and two from Czech winger David Hicl. Potters sat top of Division One after the opening day of the season.

The following week Potters travelled to old rivals Wilderpark and were controversially denied all three points as the game ended 1-1. David Hicl had given Potters the lead, but the home side equalized with the very last kick of the game from a corner that should have been given as a goal kick. Still, an unbeaten start to the season for Henry Willard's men.

A hard fought 1-0 win followed on 2nd October as a single Mike Beverley goal gave Potters all three points over Eynsford Reserves, and a week later Potters continued their fine form with a 3-2 home win over visiting Hildenborough, this time with goals coming from Bradley Bowman, Olly Hayward, and a great finish from left-back Mark Weller. These goals for defenders Hayward and Weller were also notably their first ever goals for the club.

A visit to Fleetdown FC in Dartford followed a week later on 16th October, and Potters came away with their third win on the bounce after two more players grabbed their first goals for the club; Gary Weller and summer signing Russ McEwan were the men on target to hand Potters a 2-1 win and keep them top of Division One.

A break from the league saw Potters progress from the First Round of the League Cup on 23rd October with a 1-0 away win over Wilderpark. On a windy day in Sevenoaks, a single super-strike from the halfway line by veteran Gary Bowman was enough to take Potters through to the next round.

The following week was one to forget as Potters slumped to a surprise 3-1 defeat away at St.Lawrence Reserves. A whole host of injuries and absences had depleted the Potters squad ahead of this game, and a single Bradley Bowman goal was not enough to avoid the first defeat of the season.

An emphatic 6-1 away win over Halls Reserves a week later however was not only a great response, but the start of an incredible 8-game unbeaten run which stretched from 6th November through to the end of February! Goals from Mike Beverley, Jack Wilson, Chris Gubbins, and two for Russ McEwan contributed to an brilliant win for Potters in this game.

During the month of November, Manager Henry Willard notably gained his Level 1 FA Coaching badge, sandwiched in between a 2-2 draw at home to Wilderpark on 13th November which saw a fantastic 25yrd goal from Greg Francis and a penalty scored by former Wilderpark striker Chris Gubbins, and a 4-0 Cup Quarter Final win a week later away at Sevenoaks Weald. Goals that afternoon came from captain Craig Bowman, Jack Wilson, and Mike Beverley(2).

That cup game on 20th November was to be Potters last action until 15th January due to snow and frost, but the players showed no signs of rustiness as they defeated Sevenoaks Weald again upon returning to action, this time in the league with a 3-1 win. David Hicl, Bradley Bowman and Mike Beverley were the scorers on this occasion.

A visit to Westerham on 22nd January saw Potters once again romp to a 4-1 win, with Mike Beverley's single goal complimented by a superb hatrick from young striker Russ McEwan, although this game was to be a sad farewell for midfield dynamo Jack Wilson who emigrated to Australia following this match. Wilson notably captained the side for his final game.

A week later, a fiery tie at home to local rivals Seal on 29th January resulted in another fantastic win for Potters who ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Bradley Bowman and Chris Gubbins. January signing Sam Rhodes also notably made his debut in this game as a substitute.

February continued in the same manner with a 3-1 win over St.Lawrence Reserves thanks to strikes from Gary Weller and two from star striker Mike Beverley, before a late Russ McEwan header snatched all three points for Potters in a 4-3 home win over Fleetdown on 12th February, with earlier goals coming courtesy of David Hicl and Mike Beverley(2).

Goals from Russ McEwan and Sam Rhodes' first for the club were unfortunately not enough to take Potters through to the League Cup Final as they fell to a 4-2 defeat in the Semi's away at Fleetdown on 5th March, and there was to be another sad departure from the club following this game, as influential winger David Hicl also left the country for a new job in Paris.

A 2-1 win in the league at home to Sevenoaks Weald the following week kept the promotion push on track thanks to goals from Craig Bowman and Mike Beverley. February signing Joff Funnell notably made his full debut in this win.

Two late goals for Hildenborough saw Potters slip to an unfortunate 3-2 defeat on 19th March despite both Beverley and Bowman getting on the scoresheet again, although another three points were picked up a week later as Greg Francis netted the only goal in a narrow 1-0 home win over Halls.

Off the field, manager Henry Willard successfully completed his Level 2 FA Coaching badge in April, although on the field it was a topsy-turvy month for Potters; Back-to-back 1-0 defeats to old foes Old Boars effectively surrendered the title, despite giving absolutely everything to the cause, particularly in the second game in which Potters dominated but could not find the win needed. David Hicl also travelled back from Paris for the day just to play in the second game vs Old Boars - A gesture that was immensely appreciated by everyone at Potters FC.

A Tuesday evening game on 26th April saw Potters initially slip to a shock 2-0 defeat away at bottom-of-the-table Eynsford Reserves, but a league investigation following the fixture found Eynsford guilty of fielding a large number of ineligible players, handing Potters all three points.

The last game of the season arrived on 30th April, and the Potters players put in a sublime performance to defeat promotion rivals Seal in a marvellous 2-1 win, with Mike Beverley grabbing the first goal before Mark Healey effectively sealed promotion to the Premier Division for Potters FC as he netted the winner fifteen minutes from time to send the Potters players, management and large gathering of travelling fans into raptures!

A Wilderpark draw at Eynsford essentially booked Potters promotion party on the final day of the season, and Potters FC, a once little village club from Borough Green, would now be rubbing shoulders with the big boys in the Sevenoaks Premier Division following an unbelievable third successive promotion!

A big thank you must go to all the players and supporters who have given up their time week-in week-out to carry Potters Football Club this far.
Three promotions in a row to take a small village club from the Sevenoaks Third Division up into the Premier Division, is virtually unheard of, and an absolutely magnificent achievement.

Highlights of the 2010/11 season most certainly include the pre-season tour of Holland and Germany in August, the 6-1 win away at Halls Reserves in November, & Mark Healey's winning goal vs Seal on the last day of the season which effectively sealed promotion.

It's hard to sum up a whole season's worth of effort and commitment, and high's and low's in a single text document, without being able to embrace the passion and desire from within the camp very easily, but after another outstanding season for Potters FC, the loyalty from virtually every single player year after year, speaks for itself.
Everyone who is a part of Potters FC feels at home, and the passion of the club works its way into the hearts of every single player, instantly converting them into fans of their own team.

An absolutely fantastic season once again lads, you've all done yourselves and the club extremely proud!!

Here's to THREE successive promotions! Division 1 Runner's Up, & promotion to the Premier Division!

UP THE POTTERS!!!!!
