The saying goes that there’s no ‘I’ in team and if the supporters of the under 7’s ever needed convincing that this is the case then they got their proof with two fantastic team performances from the boys. With the squad decimated by injuries due to various scrapes and scratches it was all the more amazing that the squad demonstrated what they were all about with a gutsy and hardworking performance.
There were so many excellent displays it was almost impossible to pick a man of the match. As the boys grow ever more confident the team sheet now looks like a throw back from the 1966 world cup final with Adam ‘Banksy’ Davis, Josh ‘Moore’ Bentley, Ben ‘Charlton’ Cottam and Dan ‘Hurst’ Brearley making up the spine of the first team.
The game kicked off and the boys had a difficult time of it in the first half as Darfield had their own David Beckham as their number 7 had a really strong first half and had a great influence on the game. To the credit of our boys they stuck manfully at their task and did all they could to stay in the game.
The boys clearly took confidence from the first half display and came out like a train for the second. With the defensive partnership of Josh B and Ben H holding firm, Ben C was given a free license to stamp his authority on the game and that’s just what he did. With great support from Captain Fantastic Jude Hammond and Morgan ‘Bite your legs’ Wray the boys put on a fantastic second half display with Ben C sticking the ball in the back of the net.
The second game picked up from the first. With Kalem in the net, Josh H and Byron at the back, George and Owen in midfield and up front we had Ben L. Similar to the first game the boys were under early pressure as Darfield demonstrated their quality and strength in depth. But the boys responded well with Ben ‘Jinky’ Lax picking up a great clearance from Kalem to run from the half way line and slip the ball past the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.
The second half proved to be no different as Joseph entered the game and instantly stamped his authority on it with some great tackling and passing. Within minutes of Joseph’s arrival the boys scored a second. A great run from George down the wing and a pin point cross presented Ben L with an opportunity that he thrives on. A side foot finish for the second goal, the crowd went wild and Ben celebrated with his team mates.
Today we had some fantastic performance from every player but the most important thing is how they played as a team. It was a really difficult job to pick a man of the match but two had to be chosen. For the first game the award went to Ben Hopkinson for his fantastic attitude, hard work and great tackling. For the second game the award went to Joseph who had such a great influence on the game when he went on.
Well done today to everyone involved. We’re really starting to play well in every game. If we continue to work as hard as we did on Sunday everything else will fall into place.
