The Club had its roots in Queen Street Youth Club. In 1969 the Club became Manor Park FC. Initially the Club played in the Longton League, moved on to the Fenton and District League and then progressed to the North Staffs Alliance League. The Club played at Goldenhill Road, Fenton,
sharing a ground with Foley FC. The Club was run from the Duke of Wellington in Fenton.
The first major trophy won by the Club was the Staffs Presidents Cup in the season 1980/81. In the following season the Club moved their base to the Redgate pub in Dresden and changed their name to Redgate United.
Redgate United swept the board winning all honours in the North Staffs Alliance League.
In the season 1983/84, Redgate United were accepted in the Staffs County League and moved to a ground in Stone owned by Bill Bratt. Despite extensive work carried out on that ground, in the following season, Redgate United moved to share St Josephs College pitches with Hanford FC.
During the mid 80’s, Redgate United started a second team initially as a youth side but becoming an adult side after a couple of seasons.
In 1986, Parkway Clayton approached Redgate United to buy
their facilities at Northwood Lane, Clayton. For the season 1987/88, the Club changed its name to Redgate Clayton and began work on a Clubhouse at their new ground. In this season Redgate Clayton became the first Club in the area to win the Walsall Senior Cup
In the early 1990’s, Redgate Clayton dominated local Junior Football becoming the most successful side in the Staffs County League, an honour that the Club still hold. The Club
has won the Staffs Vase for a record four times. On each occasion, the Club beat opposition in the final of higher league status.
During the 80’s/90’s Redgate Clayton actually ran five teams. Two senior Saturday teams, two youth sides and an over 35’s side.
Over their years with the Club the following members of the Committee have been awarded Long Service Certificates by the Staffs FA. Arthur Jackson, Clive Russell, Roger Farr and Rob Lovatt
Martin Bowyer had been brought in as manager after helping Crabby with the coaching side in the previous season. Jonathan Gillie took the assistants role and Crabby took on a new role as the 1st teams First Aider.
After a promising pre-season, the squad consisting of:
Lee Ridgeway, Kris Hardy, Alex Derrington, Danny Hepburn, Steve Walker, Adam Grocott Andrew Sherratt, Jack Bowyer, Shaun Whieldon, Jake Bowyer, Jonathan Gillie, Tony Davies, Andrew Shingler, Karl Bayley Michael Wilcox, Jimmy Gartside and Wayne Glover…..
visited Wolstanton on the opening day. Redgate opened the season losing 5-3, being 3-0 down at half time.
The season progressed with Tony Davies, Michael Wilcox and Adam Grocott departing while players such as Matt Birks, Mark Bagnall, Lee Ratcliff and Nath Calvert with brought in.
An injury for Bagnall & Wiggy and the shock transfer request of Calvert after just one game, left Redgate with a squad of 13/14 with other players suffering an injury prone season.
Losing early games to Wolstanton, Ball HayeGreen & Newcastle Town, meant the holy grail of the league was looking less likely each week, but Redgate progressed in all Cup competitions reaching 3 Semi Finals.
Leek Cup Semi Final - Hanley Town 4 vs 0 Redgate Clayton
Staffs Vase Semi Final - Redgate Clayton 0 vs 3 Leek CSOB
League Cup Semi Final - Redgate Clayton 4 vs 3 Florence
Redgate reached the Final of the League Cup, facing Hanley Town @ Norton.
Redgate out played and out battled Hanley to win the League Cup Final 1-0, Glover getting on the end of a Sherratt free kick. GOOOO ON THE GATE.
The end of the season saw Redgate struggle to field a side most games. A lot of games were played with a bare 11 or players brought in from the 2nd team.
Everybody was happy to see the season draw to a close, with the team playing Monday, Wednesday, Friday & Saturday during one week.
A final league position of 9th wrapped up an average season with the extra bonus of the League Cup success.
Martin handed in his resignation and the challenge of appointing a new first team Manager begun!
